Assistant Cook

About the role

Full-time, 11-month position (plus 10 summer days) in the Food Service Department at Fairport, NY 14450. Hours: Monday–Friday, 6:00 AM – 2:00 PM. Starting September 2026.

Responsibilities

• Cook and supervise Food Service staff in the absence of the Cook Manager.
• Prepare and serve food for the school food service department.
• Assist the Cook Manager with production reports, temperature charts, HACCP and sanitation reports, inventory, stock and delivery management, cash and meal accountability, kitchen equipment use and care, and other assigned management duties.
• Maintain health, safety, and sanitary practices per regulatory requirements.
• Assist in all phases of off-site School Food Service programs, including delivery and service.
• Ensure meals are served in pleasant facilities by courteous staff; foster employee productivity and satisfaction.
• Communicate effectively with supervisor and coworkers.
• Perform end-of-day cash handling for all Monroe One BOCES food service venues when the Cook Manager is absent.

Qualifications

• Civil Service eligibility as Assistant Cook.
• Option A: Recognized certificate program in Food Service Administration (Food Production focus). Applicants must submit a copy of the certificate or diploma.
• Option B: One year of full-time (or equivalent part-time) paid experience in large-scale food preparation for cafeterias, restaurants, hotels, or institutions (excluding short order or fast food).
• Good knowledge of quantity food preparation principles and skills.
• Ability to supervise others and maintain basic management records.
• Ability to carry out oral and written instructions.
• Current valid NYS Driver’s License.
• Experience in quantity food cooking in schools or equivalent institutions (e.g., restaurants, hotels).
• Adequate physical stamina to stand for extended periods.
• Physically able to perform essential functions, including lifting up to 50 pounds (with or without reasonable accommodations).

Pay

$16.00–$22.59 per hour; actual salary dependent on experience and contract.
