We are seeking an Assistant Controller to support the Company and the Accounting-Tax-Finance (ATF) team. This role is structured across three key areas: accounting operations, financial planning and analysis, and financial systems. The position is safety-sensitive, requiring work on construction sites with inherent hazards, and is subject to drug testing and compliance policies as a Federal Contractor.

About the Role

Wagman is a multi-faceted, fourth-generation family-owned construction firm specializing in heavy civil, general construction, and geotechnical services. Core competencies include design-build, infrastructure, marine construction, modified concrete, grooving and grinding, and geotechnical construction services.

Responsibilities

  • Accounting Operations and Financial Reporting
    • Supervise and direct day-to-day activities for general accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, fixed asset accounting, and financial reporting.
    • Manage the Staff Accountant, Accounting Administrator, and Accounts Payable staff, including mentoring and development.
    • Oversee the month-end closing process for a consolidated group of companies, joint ventures, and related entities, including journal entries, account reconciliations, and other closing activities.
    • Prepare accurate and timely financial statements and management reports.
    • Manage monthly accounting and reporting for the company’s employee benefit plan.
    • Monitor, track, and ensure timely filing of regulatory applications, including prequalifications and business licenses.
    • Assist the Controller with tax compliance, external financial audits, tax return preparation, and maintaining compliance with GAAP and company policies.
  • Financial Planning and Analysis
    • Own the company’s consolidated financial budget/forecast, including driver development, scenario construction, sensitivity analysis, and documentation of assumptions.
    • Coordinate the forecast cycle with division heads and project managers, ensuring on-time completion and adherence to format requirements.
    • Monitor submitted budgets/forecasts for completeness, consistency, and reconciliation to approved projections.
    • Perform reasonableness reviews of forecast phasing and escalate unresolved questions to the Controller and CFO.
    • Aggregate operations budgets/forecasts into the company budget, reconcile period-over-period movements, and prepare variance commentary for management reporting.
    • Provide decision support and ad hoc analysis to the CFO and Controller.
  • Financial Systems and Reporting Platform
    • Serve as the accountable owner of the company’s Datarails implementation, including scope, configuration, testing, user adoption, and training.
    • Establish source-data standards for the department and direct related readiness workstreams.
    • Evaluate, pilot, and deploy AI capabilities within the finance function, such as variance commentary drafting, anomaly detection, and natural-language query of financial data.
    • Develop, test, and maintain financial and operational dashboards according to established close schedules.
    • Measure and report on close-cycle time and manual effort displaced by the platform.
    • Participate in business process improvement projects.
  • Perform other duties and projects as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting (required).
  • 7+ years of progressive experience in accounting/finance, including at least two years of direct supervisory responsibility (public accounting experience preferred).
  • Demonstrated experience designing and building driver-based financial models in Microsoft Excel (candidates will be asked to walk through a model they built).
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including structured tables, Power Query, and multi-sheet model construction.
  • Working knowledge of percentage-of-completion revenue recognition and work-in-process reporting.
  • Experience in the construction industry is strongly preferred.
  • Hands-on experience with financial planning and analysis platforms (e.g., Datarails, Vena, Planful, Workday Adaptive Planning, Anaplan) is strongly preferred.
  • CPA, MBA, or CCIFP certification is a plus.
  • Experience with Viewpoint V6/Vista construction software, SQL, Power BI, or Tableau is a plus.

Physical Requirements

  • Able to sit for extended periods while working at a computer performing routine office tasks.
  • Able to lift and carry up to 25 lbs. occasionally.
  • Occasional standing, walking, bending, reaching, and carrying items.
  • Ability to perform simple grasping and fine manipulation tasks with both hands.
  • Acceptable corrected vision and hearing.
  • Ability to travel to project sites occasionally.

Pay

$100,000 – $125,000 (based on experience).
