Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney II
Job Summary
This position will be responsible for representing the Commonwealth in adjudications/trials, sentencing hearings, probation violation hearings, show cause hearings, etc. The attorney will manage a felony and misdemeanor case load which involves screening cases for disposition in the General District Court or indictment in the Circuit Court. Representation includes preparing for trial, reviewing charging documents, reviewing evidentiary documents, issuing subpoenas, interviewing and preparing witnesses, performing legal research, responding with pre-trial and post-trial motions, executing trial strategy, and coordinating with the victim/witness case managers, as well as other related duties.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires a Juris Doctor Degree (JD) from an accredited law school (or equivalent as state law provides)
- Two (2) years of related work experience as a licensed practicing attorney
- Licensed member of Virginia State Bar
- Prosecution experience preferred
Hiring Salary
Hiring salary is commensurate with experience.
Job Contingencies and Special Requirements
- Must be licensed to practice law in Virginia
- Must be a member in good standing with the Virginia State Bar (ability to obtain a waiver of admission within a reasonable time is also acceptable but should not exceed four (4) months)
- Must continue legal education annually
