Assistant Coach, Sailing

Hiring range: Please inquire. Regular full-time position located in Hanover, NH. Onsite only; 40 scheduled hours per week, 12 months per year.

About the Role

Participate as part of a decision-making coaching staff under the direction of the head coach in planning, coaching, recruiting, administering, and promoting the program within NCAA, Ivy League, ICSA, and institutional standards. The Assistant Coach plays a critical role in achieving the overall goals of the program by providing recommendations and suggestions to the head coach regarding competition strategies, line-ups, and priority listing of recruits, as well as offering initiative and independent judgment in coaching instruction, evaluating and communicating with prospective recruits and their parents, and representing the program to constituents.

Responsibilities

• Coaching/Mentoring (60% of time):
  • Contribute suggestions and recommendations to planning and implementing conditioning, training, and coaching programs for the team.
  • Independently seek and develop new training concepts and sport-specific knowledge to enhance the coaching staff’s expertise.
  • Prepare scouting reports and game plans for opponents.
  • During competition, make recommendations to the head coach regarding adjustments to game plans and line-ups.
  • Teach skills to student-athletes during team practices, games, and individual/small group training sessions; evaluate performance and offer technical, strategic, and mental instruction.
  • Demonstrate a sincere interest in the academic, personal, and physical welfare of each student-athlete; counsel team members and consult with the head coach and appropriate College staff as necessary.
• Recruiting (25% of time):
  • Participate in developing and implementing an overall recruiting plan, including determining program needs by position and class, selecting recruiting events, and setting admissions priorities.
  • Assume significant independent responsibility for:
    • Identifying qualified students and talented athletes.
    • Communicating effectively with prospects via phone, mail, and email.
    • Traveling to evaluate prospects, meet parents, and high school coaches.
    • Organizing and participating in campus visits by prospects.
    • Maintaining appropriate recruiting records as required by the NCAA.
    • Staying abreast of the College’s programs and opportunities to inform prospects effectively.
    • Contributing positively toward the enrollment of desirable athletic prospects.
• Administration (15% of time):
  • Ensure athletes and athletics representatives comply with NCAA, ICSA, and Ivy League rules; stay abreast of rule changes, applications, and interpretations.
  • Provide input in planning and administering the program budget, including assessing needs for equipment, team travel, and recruiting.
  • Plan and reconcile recruiting and team travel expenses.
  • Identify and negotiate with potential opponents to contribute to developing a competitive schedule.
  • Work with the department’s travel coordinator to set team travel plans.
  • Communicate with alumni, parents, and supporters regarding the program’s status.
  • Promote Dartmouth and the program through participation in camps, clinics, speeches, and community involvement.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with students, parents, faculty, staff, alumni, fans, community members, and the media.
  • Represent Dartmouth, the athletic department, and the program professionally.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree plus 6 or more years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Six years of experience playing and/or coaching sailing at the high school or collegiate level.
• Advanced knowledge and understanding of the technical and strategic aspects of sailing.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work effectively with a diverse community.
• Ability to teach, lead, motivate, and guide student-athletes.
• Ability to recruit effectively without athletic grants-in-aid and under highly selective admissions standards.
• Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.

Preferred Qualifications

• Sailing experience as a coach or athlete at the intercollegiate level.
