Assistant Clinical Manager (RN) - Ambulatory Infusion Clinic - Days
About the Role
VCU Health Chesterfield Pavilion, a new four-story ambulatory surgery center and medical office building scheduled to open in April 2027, seeks an Assistant Clinical Manager. This role facilitates patient flow, coordinates activities and communication for the clinical area during assigned shifts, and serves as a resource and leader for patients, staff, healthcare providers, administration, and other disciplines in collaboration with the clinical manager and other clinic leadership. The Assistant Clinical Manager ensures patient care is delivered efficiently, caringly, and courteously, actively supporting culture, process, and optimization of nursing practice to enable VCU Health System's recognition for excellence in nursing and continued Magnet Hospital designation.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise care provided by maintaining high visibility to patients/families and staff in clinical area(s)
- Share accountabilities with manager for unit/department/organizational goal achievements including patient experience, team member engagement, and continuous process improvement
- In collaboration with appropriate leadership, manage staff including recruitment, retention, coaching, training, evaluation, and development, as well as preparation and delegation of work schedules and workflow
- Provide leadership and serve as a resource in patient care and unit activities including workflow implementation, supply ordering, staffing model changes, and model development
- Assist staff in developing problem-solving and decision-making skills
- Maintain records pertaining to staff competency, quality audits, and other related records
- Collaborate with leadership to review and advise on clinic fiscal needs
- Reinforce and role model a holistic approach in preserving therapeutic nurse/patient relationships throughout the healthcare continuum
- Adapt communication styles and techniques based on individual patient and/or family needs
- Communicate with patients to resolve questions or concerns and role model appropriate responses to patient/family concerns
- Identify potential safety hazards and use BEEP tools to resolve; escalate safety incidents when necessary
- De-escalate behaviors that can create potential safety concerns and escalate to the appropriate level
- Participate in analysis, follow-up, and prevention of further safety events
- Empower staff to assist patients throughout the healthcare continuum to gain a sense of control and participate in their recovery
- Promote a climate of holistic, non-judgmental, relationship-based care
- Anticipate variables affecting patient comfort by observing for verbal or nonverbal behaviors indicating discomfort, pain, distress, or dissatisfaction
- Role model how to promote positive patient outcomes by advocating for patients through adapting and challenging current systems
- Maintain an environment conducive to positive learning experiences for students and healthcare professionals
- Promote and assist staff in using teaching strategies appropriate to patient/visitor and staff needs
- Serve as a clinical resource to all staff and students
- Commit to continuous learning through educational and professional improvement programs
- Create an environment promoting educational growth opportunities for nursing staff (e.g., PAP, specialty certification, support toward advanced degree)
- Encourage and facilitate Evidence-Based Practice projects and disseminate findings
- Coordinate with Nurse Clinician and Clinical Manager to ensure educational requirements and clinical competencies are maintained for clinical staff
- Focus on overall clinic needs and assess patients/staff in need of assistance
- Manage clinic flow for consistency and efficiency of care, assisting with prioritization of activities for patients on the unit
- Take a proactive role in implementing multidisciplinary coordination of care for specific patient populations
- Coordinate a safe and timely admission/discharge process to optimize clinic capacity
- Take appropriate actions to enhance positive outcomes, even in challenging situations
- Promote cost-effective care through team assignments, assessing adequacy of resources for patient care, anticipating staffing needs, and going into staffing when needed (up to 80%)
- Collaborate on professionalism and understanding for peers and other clinical disciplines, participating as an effective member of the patient care team
- Participate in or lead department/organization-wide committees that improve patient care or administrative systems
- Effectively communicate concerns and seek guidance when resolving problems from appropriate clinical and/or administrative leaders in a timely manner
- Successfully manage concerns from patients, families, and other departments and follow through to resolution; refer unresolved issues to appropriate leaders
- Adapt to rapid change and serve as a positive role model during change initiatives
- Reinforce an environment fostering open communication and mutual respect among caregivers and between staff, patients, and visitors
- Collaborate with management and participate in or lead performance improvement projects
- Participate in the interdisciplinary model in a collaborative and holistic approach to patient care and lead clinic throughput
- Adhere to regulatory standards/guidelines (CMS, Joint Commission, CGCHAPS, etc.) in personal practice and role model those standards
- Collaborate to develop action plans with leadership for improvement/compliance with regulatory standards
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree from a professional nursing program recognized and/or approved by the corresponding Board of Nursing
- Current RN licensure in Virginia or eligible compact state
- Minimum of three (3) years of clinical experience with at least one year as an RN (clinical experience can include CMA, LPN, athletic trainer, or other technical clinical positions)
- Charge Nurse or supervisory experience preferred or demonstrated leadership skills in previous roles
- Certification in specialty area preferred
- Experience in Academic Health Care preferred
- Experience with similar patient population in an ambulatory care setting or as applicable to area of practice preferred
- Cultural responsiveness required
