ASSISTANT CITY SOLICITOR III - SCHOOLS

Under the direction of the City Solicitor, this position performs professional legal work related to the Worcester Public Schools, including consultation, legal opinions, public records requests, contract negotiation, and representation in litigation.

Responsibilities

  • Represent and counsel the Worcester Public Schools and employees on civil, administrative, and other legal issues.
  • Represent the Worcester Public Schools and its employees in state and federal courts, administrative bodies, and tribunals.
  • Assist in developing legal structures, codes, and interpreting laws, codes, and ordinances.
  • Conduct legal research and communicate findings in legal memoranda and opinions.
  • Draft, serve, and file legal documents such as discovery requests, pleadings, briefs, and trial documents.
  • Attend School Committee meetings and conferences, occasionally in the evening.
  • Present legal interpretations and alternatives in meetings, conferences, and committees.
  • Stay updated on developments in municipal and education law.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or necessitated by workloads.

Requirements

  • Five (5) years practicing as an attorney in municipal or contract law.
  • Juris Doctorate (JD) from an accredited law school.
  • Member of the Massachusetts Bar in good standing.
  • Valid Driver’s License and access to reliable transportation.
  • Regular onsite attendance is required.

Skills

  • Thorough knowledge of City codes, Charter, and ordinances.
  • Thorough knowledge of state and federal constitutional and statutory provisions relating to municipalities and public schools.
  • Thorough knowledge of state and federal rules of civil and appellate procedure and rules of evidence.
  • Knowledge of the organization, functions, and legal limitations of public school departments.
  • Ability to analyze, appraise, and organize facts, evidence, and precedents.
  • Ability to present legal material effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to determine alternative approaches to legal and administrative problems.
  • Ability to present and argue cases in court and handle unanticipated trial issues.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with departments, officials, and the public.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in civil litigation, municipal law, or education law.
  • Seven (7) years of practicing as an attorney in municipal or contract law.

Pay

$95,090 - $125,124 annually
