About the role
The City of Phoenix Law Department seeks an Assistant City Attorney IV for the Litigation Section. This position represents and advises various City departments and employees in litigation matters in both federal and state court.
Responsibilities
- Represent and advise various City departments and employees in litigation matters in both federal and state court from pre-litigation claims through appeals.
- Investigate, conduct discovery, and handle discovery disputes, dispositive motions, mediations, and settlement conferences.
- Present cases to the City's Claims Committee and the City Council.
- Periodically present cases to the City's Claims Committee and the City Council.
- Handle all court obligations, City Council or City management meetings, and other in-office obligations.
Requirements
- Four years of experience as a practicing civil or criminal attorney.
- Experience in the practice of municipal law; the review, negotiation, and drafting of contracts or other primary responsibility for participation in transactional work.
- Experience with significant client contact; primary responsibility for civil litigation, and pleading and motion-practice.
- One year of government law practice; and a working knowledge of the legal subject matter involved with the department to which assignment will be made.
- Graduation from an accredited school of law.
- Admission to the bar of the State of Arizona.
Qualifications
- Experience in the litigation of cases in both state and federal court.
- Litigation experience in all stages of a case from filing through resolution including drafting and arguing motions, taking depositions, and investigating and preparing evidence.
- Experience with municipal law practice, including applicable statutes, such as notice of claims, immunities and public-records matters.
- Experience with conflict resolution and creativity in alternative problem-solving techniques.

Pay
Effective July 6th, the following pay rates will be in effect.
Pay Range: $142,001.60 - $181,001.60 annually.
Hiring Range: $142,001.60 - $178,006.40 annually.
This entry pay rate applies only to Attorney IV's performing litigation work.
Schedule
This position is eligible for up to 4 days a week of remote telework, with one in-office day per week for meeting with your section, implemented at the discretion of the City Attorney.
