About the role
The City of Pittsburgh Department of Law seeks a Federal Litigation Attorney to defend the City, its departments, officials, and employees in complex federal litigation in both trial and appellate courts. The ideal candidate will handle a wide range of federal matters, including constitutional, statutory, and regulatory issues.
Responsibilities
- Defend actions alleging constitutional violations or intentional torts against the City and its employees
- Represent the City in federal discrimination cases
- Manage all phases of litigation from case assessment to resolution
- Prepare and present appellate briefs and oral arguments
- Provide strategic legal advice on risk mitigation, policy development, and compliance with federal law
- Respond to subpoenas and government inquiries
- Coordinate with outside counsel and participate in internal investigations
- Advise on matters that may give rise to litigation
Requirements
- At least five (5) years of full-time, paid legal experience in litigation
- A Juris Doctorate Degree and an active Pennsylvania license on the start date
- Knowledge of civil rights statutes, municipal liability, federal discrimination laws, and federal practice and procedure
Qualifications
- Experience in federal jury trials from voir dire to post-trial motions preferred
- Equivalency of experience before tribunals/judicial bodies may be accepted
