About the role
The Assistant Chief Medical Dosimetrist plays a critical role in overseeing dosimetry clinical operations, education and training programs, and research support activities. They provide leadership, mentorship, and guidance to the dosimetry staff, ensuring compliance with departmental standards and procedures.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with the Chief Medical Dosimetrist to oversee dosimetry clinical operations, education and training programs, and research support activities.
- Provide leadership, mentorship, and guidance to the dosimetry staff in accordance with departmental standards and procedures.
- Maintain treatment planning tasks and workflows to ensure timely completion and on-schedule patient treatment starts.
- Train and mentor junior dosimetrists and new team members.
- Lead efforts to develop, implement, and refine new treatment planning protocols and quality improvement initiatives.
- Produce high-quality treatment plans, including all pertinent setup instructions, to ensure accurate and safe delivery of prescribed treatments.
- Compute dose distributions and generate isodose curves for proton therapy.
- Participate in complex case care, including patient localization, immobilization procedures, and fabrication of custom treatment devices as needed.
- Report any process improvement opportunities to the Director of Medical Physics.
- Inform Director of Medical Physics of required resources for budgeting purposes.
- Ensure compliance with all New York Proton Center policies, including privacy and confidentiality requirements under HIPAA regulations.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in physics or related fields required; or graduation from an approved Medical Dosimetry Program through the American Association of Medical Dosimetrists (AAMD).
- Certification by the Medical Dosimetry Certification Board (MDCB).
- Eight years of recent experience as a Dosimetrist in a Clinical Radiation Therapy Department, or equivalent applicable work experience, is required.
- A minimum of two years of experience as a senior or lead dosimetrist in a proton radiation therapy department is preferred.
- A minimum of two years of proton planning experience is required.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to work flexible hours as needed.
- Ability to manage time and prioritize workflow.
- Knowledge of Electronic Medical Records and TPS, such as Aria and Eclipse, is preferred.
