About the role

The Assistant Chief Engineer at Cordova Shelpplant is responsible for overseeing all phases of assigned projects, ensuring timely completion and adherence to budget constraints. This role involves analyzing projects to develop design options or recommendations for maintaining and improving structures, processes, and equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares or secures and reviews cost estimates.
  • Compiles required cost and equipment information and writes appropriate requests.
  • Manages all aspects of project work including design, CIR write-ups, developing contractor bid packages, overseeing project installation, cost tracking.
  • Schedules repair, maintenance, and installation of machines, tools, and equipment to ensure continuous production operations.
  • Provides training and start-up assistance for new equipment as well as post-project support.
  • Coordinates activities of workers fabricating or modifying machines, tools, or equipment to manufacture new products or improve existing products.
  • Directs maintenance activities on utility systems to provide continuous supply of heat, steam, electric power, gas, or air required for operations.
  • Manages preventive and predictive maintenance program in conjunction with engineering and maintenance staff.
  • Reviews production, quality control, and maintenance reports and statistics to plan and modify maintenance activities.
  • Plans, develops, and implements new methods and procedures designed to improve operations, minimize operating costs, and effect greater utilization of labor and materials.
  • Reviews new product plans and discusses equipment needs and modifications with design engineers and Research and Development Department.
  • Confers with management, engineering, and quality control personnel to resolve maintenance problems and recommend measures to improve operations and conditions of machines and equipment.
  • Researches and organizes energy reduction projects while working with energy firms for eligible rebates.
  • Maintains records and other relevant documents pertaining to equipment and supplies.
  • Notifies designated personnel of any environmental or safety incidents or risks not previously documented, in accordance with Environmental Awareness and/or safety trainings.
  • Performs other similar or related duties as requested or assigned.

Qualifications

  • A combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor's degree (mechanical engineering preferred) and five years of related experience.
  • Two years of maintenance project management experience, preferably in the food industry.
  • Previous leadership experience required.
  • Proven successful record working within time restrictions.
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one situations to supervisor and other employees of the organization.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Process Safety Management.
  • Hydraulic system, steam boiler, NH3 refrigeration and Freon refrigeration experience preferred.
  • EPA 608 or 609 card preferred.
  • Experience in construction field a plus.

Work Environment

  • Frequent exposure to wet and/or humid conditions and moving mechanical parts.
  • Frequent exposure to outside weather conditions.
  • Occasional exposure to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; extreme cold; risk of electrical shock and vibration.

Physical Demands

  • Regularly stands, walks, uses hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms.
  • Frequently lifts and/or moves up to 25 pounds and occasionally lifts and/or moves up to 50 pounds.
  • Regularly uses teamwork skills, interpersonal and customer service skills, basic math, reads, speaks, and writes English.
