Assistant Boys Basketball Coach @ Jr High School (26-27)

Extra-duty stipend position in addition to a certified role, determined by the district's salary schedule for the specific sport. Seasonal commitment based on the sport season, including pre-season, regular season, and post-season responsibilities. Annual appointment, subject to renewal based on performance and program needs. Schedule varies by season and competition schedule; includes after-school hours, evenings, and occasional weekends.

Position Overview

The Assistant Coach supports the Head Coach in all aspects of team leadership, including practice planning, skill development, and game-day preparation. This role helps foster a positive, inclusive, and disciplined team environment that emphasizes sportsmanship, academic success, and student-athlete growth. The Assistant Coach works closely with the Head Coach and athletic staff to ensure the program aligns with school and district expectations.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in education preferred or minimum of 36 college hours or online 20-hour substitute training.
• Valid Missouri Teacher Certificate preferred.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Skills in human relations, leadership, and conflict management.
• Knowledgeable of coaching techniques that meet the diverse needs of students.
• Knowledgeable of and adhere to all local, state, and federal regulations.
• Abide by all rules and regulations established by the Poplar Bluff R-I Board of Education.
• Abide by and uphold all rules and regulations established by the Missouri State High School Activities Association.
• Actively pursue the licensure to drive a school bus suitable for the sport they are coaching.

Responsibilities

• Coach individual participants in the skills necessary for excellent achievement in the sport involved.
• Assist in making plans and scheduling a regular program of practice in season.
• Work with the Head Coach and Athletic Director in scheduling interscholastic contests.
• Assist in making recommendations to purchase equipment, supplies, and uniforms, as appropriate.
• Assist in maintaining an accurate, up-to-date inventory of all uniforms and equipment as appropriate.
• Assist with necessary attendance forms, insurance records, and similar paperwork.
• Assist in overseeing the safety conditions of the facility or area where the assigned sport is conducted.
• Assist in establishing performance criteria for eligibility in interscholastic competition in his/her sport.
• Enforce discipline and sportsman-like behavior at all times, and assist in establishing and overseeing penalties for breach of such standards by individual students.
• Have a good working knowledge of the rules and regulations of the sport he or she is coaching.
• Reflect a favorable impression of the Poplar Bluff R-I School District to other schools and communities.
• Follow all policies set forth by the board of education, building, and department rules and procedures.
• Create a positive influence on players, fans, colleagues, and others; the desire to win should never override the health, safety, or welfare of the athletes.
• Possess strong values and work ethic.
• Motivate those directly and indirectly associated with the program to have a supportive sense of ownership of the program.
• Promote the athletic program by strategically involving others, including parents and media.
• Establish and maintain positive relationships with persons involved in the school's operation.

• Remain organized, prepared, and flexible, constantly aware of the need for revision and change.
• Continuously study the game, searching for better methods, techniques, and strategies.

• Interpret contest rules to team members and enhance good sportsmanship among spectators.
• Show respect and support for contest officials.
• Keep the Athletic Director informed of major problems and decisions.
• Be a proactive host to opponents, treating them as guests.
• Inform players of expected conduct in the locker room, other school facilities, on the field or floor, and the bus.
• Instruct athletes on the potential dangers of participating in the sport.
• Properly condition players who are members of their squad.
• Ensure the building and equipment are secure by turning off lights and locking doors.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to work in a climate-controlled building, as well as in inclement weather.
• Ability to stand, walk, and move around for long periods of time.
• Ability to see and read, with or without vision aids, a computer screen and printed matter, and to distinguish colors.
• Sufficient hearing to understand speech at normal room levels, and to hear and understand speech on the telephone.
• Manual dexterity to operate a telephone and enter data into a computer using both hands.
• Ability to communicate effectively and efficiently with sufficient volume to be heard in normal conversation, on the telephone, and addressing groups.
• Ability to exert up to 30 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
• Ability to lift, bend, stoop, pull, grasp, and carry a variety of objects of different shapes and sizes.
