About the Role
The Assistant Bakery Manager supports the Bakery Manager in overseeing daily bakery department operations, ensuring exceptional customer service, product quality, food safety compliance, and department profitability. This position assists with production planning, inventory management, merchandising execution, associate development, and operational excellence while helping maintain a clean, organized, and customer-focused bakery environment.
Responsibilities
- Department Operations
- Assist in managing daily bakery department activities and workflows.
- Support bakery production planning to ensure product availability, freshness, and quality.
- Monitor inventory levels and assist with ordering, receiving, and product rotation.
- Ensure bakery products are prepared, packaged, labeled, displayed, and stored according to company standards.
- Maintain department cleanliness, organization, and operational efficiency.
- Assist with execution of company initiatives, promotions, and bakery programs.
- Help ensure department readiness for seasonal and holiday sales periods.
- Customer Service
- Deliver exceptional customer service and create a positive shopping experience.
- Assist customers with product selection, custom cake orders, special requests, and bakery inquiries.
- Resolve customer concerns in a professional and timely manner.
- Promote bakery products through product knowledge and suggestive selling.
- Foster a culture focused on customer satisfaction and service excellence.
- Merchandising & Sales
- Maintain attractive, fully stocked, and well-organized bakery displays.
- Ensure pricing, signage, and promotional displays are accurate and properly executed.
- Support seasonal merchandising and sales-building initiatives.
- Monitor sales trends and help identify opportunities to increase department performance.
- Maintain high standards for product freshness, appearance, and quality.
- Food Safety & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with all food safety, sanitation, health, and company standards.
- Monitor product freshness, code dates, and rotation practices.
- Ensure bakery equipment, preparation areas, and display cases are properly cleaned and sanitized.
- Maintain department records and operational procedures as required.
- Promote and enforce safe work practices among associates.
- Leadership & Team Development
- Assist with training, coaching, and developing bakery associates.
- Provide daily leadership, support, and direction to team members.
- Foster a positive work environment built on teamwork, accountability, and respect.
- Assist with scheduling and labor management efforts.
- Monitor productivity and support achievement of department goals.
- Serve as acting department leader in the Bakery Manager's absence.
- Financial Performance
- Assist in controlling department expenses, shrink, and inventory levels.
- Support achievement of sales, labor, and profitability goals.
- Monitor operational performance and productivity.
- Help identify opportunities to improve profitability and customer satisfaction.
- Support initiatives that drive sales growth and operational excellence.
Requirements
- Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Previous bakery, grocery, retail, food service, or related experience.
- Strong customer service and communication skills.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while managing multiple priorities.
- Basic understanding of bakery production, merchandising, and inventory management.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Preferred
- Previous supervisory or leadership experience.
- Experience in bakery operations or grocery retail management.
- Knowledge of inventory control, ordering systems, and labor management practices.
- Food safety certification or ability to obtain certification.
- Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Frequent lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling of up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and perform repetitive motions.
- Ability to work in refrigerated environments and near bakery production equipment.
- Manual dexterity necessary for decorating, packaging, stocking, and bakery production tasks.
