Assistant Attorney General, Major Crimes & Emerging Threats
About the role
The Major Crimes & Emerging Threats (MCET) Section is the primary prosecutorial arm of the Office of the Attorney General. This position is funded through a High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) designation and service agreement, and will be based in the United States Attorney's Office, Eastern District, Alexandria, Virginia. The majority of the attorney's time will be devoted to criminal investigations, prosecutions, and litigation of narcotics trafficking and related major crime cases in federal court. As needed, the attorney may also prosecute crimes in state court and handle other MCET duties, and advises on related bills during Virginia's legislative session. HIDTA service agreements last for one year and are typically renewable.
Responsibilities
- Conduct criminal investigations, prosecutions, and litigation of narcotics trafficking and related major crime cases in federal court
- Prosecute crimes in state court as needed
- Handle other Major Crimes & Emerging Threats Section duties
- Advise on related legislation during Virginia's legislative session
- Serve as a liaison with varying organizations
- Analyze and manage complex cases
Requirements
- Graduated from an accredited law school
- Admitted to the Virginia State Bar
- Admitted to or eligible for admission to the United States District Court
- Minimum of three to five (3–5) years of relevant litigation experience
- Prosecutorial experience in Virginia and federal courts
- Experience conducting criminal investigations through grand juries
- Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Ability to analyze and manage complex cases
- Ability to work independently
Pay
Hiring range: $91,450 – $98,075 (Pay Band UG)
