Assistant Attorney General (Civil Recovery Section)

About the role
The Civil Recovery Section represents all state agencies, boards, and commissions in civil litigation, probate, collections, and bankruptcy proceedings.
Responsibilities
- Represent state agencies in litigation where the state is a plaintiff, including:
- Contracts and grant agreement disputes
- Damage to state property
- Environmental contamination
- Fraud and overpayments
- Injunctive relief
- Probate (estates, guardianships, conservatorships)
- Real property disputes (foreclosures, ejectments, quiet title litigation)
- Receiverships
- Wildfire litigation
Requirements
- Active membership in good standing with the Oregon State Bar by the time of appointment
- At least five (5) years of experience litigating cases in Oregon state or federal court
- Superior analytical, advocacy, research, verbal communication, and writing skills
- Strong work ethic
- Experience representing clients, including direct communication and managing client relationships
- Collaborative work history with lawyers and non-lawyers
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and an inclusive working environment
- Willingness and availability to travel throughout the state for court appearances and case-related work, including overnight stays
Qualifications
- Civil litigation experience, including first chair trial and jury trial experience
- Commercial litigation experience
- Experience negotiating and resolving claims
- Completion of the following trial tasks in state or federal court:
- Opening statement
- Closing argument
- Direct examination of a fact witness
- Cross examination of a fact witness
- Direct examination of an expert witness
- Cross examination of an expert witness
- Jury selection
- Taking and defending depositions in state or federal court actions
- Complex discovery experience, including use of electronic discovery platforms
- Strong research and writing skills
Pay
This position will be filled at either the Assistant Attorney General or Senior Assistant Attorney General level, with a salary range of $9,063.00 - $17,597.00 per month, depending primarily on years of legal practice experience and other factors. Employees who are Public Employee Retirement System (PERS) participating members will have their base salary increased by 6.95% and pay a 6% employee contribution to PERS; the salary range noted reflects base salary only.
