Assistant Attorney General (Civil Recovery Section)

Civil Enforcement Division, Civil Recovery Section – Salem office with opportunities to work in Portland or Eugene, plus additional remote-work options.

About the role

The Civil Recovery Section represents all state agencies, boards, and commissions in civil litigation, probate, collections, and bankruptcy proceedings. The successful applicant will handle a wide variety of plaintiff-side litigation for the State, including:

• Contracts and grant-agreement disputes
• Damage to state property
• Environmental contamination
• Fraud and overpayments
• Injunctive relief
• Probate (estates, guardianships, conservatorships)
• Real-property disputes (foreclosures, ejectments, quiet-title litigation)
• Receiverships
• Wildfire litigation

Requirements

• Active membership in good standing with the Oregon State Bar by the time of appointment
• At least five years of experience litigating cases in Oregon state or federal court
• Superior analytical, advocacy, research, verbal-communication, and writing skills
• Strong work ethic
• Experience representing clients, including direct client communication and relationship management
• Collaborative work history with lawyers and non-lawyers
• Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and an inclusive working environment
• Willingness and availability to travel throughout the state for court appearances and other case-related work, including overnight stays

Desired qualifications

• Civil litigation experience, including first-chair and jury-trial experience
• Commercial litigation experience
• Experience negotiating and resolving claims
• Completion of each of the following trial tasks in state or federal court:
  • Opening statement
  • Closing argument
  • Direct examination of a fact witness
  • Cross-examination of a fact witness
  • Direct examination of an expert witness
  • Cross-examination of an expert witness
  • Jury selection
• Taking and defending depositions in state or federal court actions
• Complex discovery experience, including use of electronic discovery platforms
• Strong research and writing skills

Pay

This position will be filled at either the Assistant Attorney General or Senior Assistant Attorney General level, with a monthly salary range of $9,063 – $17,597, depending primarily on years of legal practice experience and other factors. Employees who are Public Employee Retirement System (PERS) participating members will have their base salary increased by 6.95% and pay a 6% employee contribution to PERS; the salary range noted reflects base salary only.
