Assistant/Associate/Professor, Legal Writing – Residential
About the Role
Vermont Law and Graduate School (VLGS), a national leader in legal writing, environmental law, and restorative justice, invites applications for one Assistant/Associate/Professor of Legal Writing. This is a residential, full-time, exempt position located at VLGS’s campus in South Royalton, VT, starting July 2027.
Students at VLGS take three required legal writing courses: Legal Research and Writing and Legal Writing II: Theory and Practice in the first year, and Appellate Advocacy as a capstone. The successful candidate will teach two sections of Legal Writing classes per semester in VLGS’s residential J.D. program, with sections typically comprising 20-25 students.
- Legal Research and Writing offers an immersive, structured introduction to systems of American law, legal organization, objective and persuasive writing, and oral communication. The curriculum is standardized across all sections.
- Legal Writing II: Theory and Practice shares common course outcomes, but professors design curricula based on their own interests.
- Appellate Advocacy involves students briefing and arguing a case currently pending before the United States Supreme Court. Professors select a pending case based on their interest in the subject matter.
Requirements
- Hold an ABA-accredited J.D. degree.
- Possess legal work experience, demonstrated teaching experience, and proven research and writing ability.
- Junior and senior-level lateral candidates will be considered.
Benefits
This is a contract, benefits-eligible position.
Pay
Salary range: $90,000–$150,000, based on experience.
