About the Role

The University of Utah seeks world-class leaders in Neurotechnology, Brain-Computer Interfaces, and Bionics for multiple tenure-track Assistant Professor openings. Exceptional candidates may also be considered at other ranks. This collaborative search spans the Departments of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Biomedical Engineering (College of Engineering) and the Departments of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Neurosurgery, Neurology, Psychiatry, and Radiology & Imaging Sciences (School of Medicine), as well as the Interdepartmental Center for Neural Interfaces, Robotics Center, Neuroscience Program, and Neurotechnology Training Program.

Candidates will have a primary appointment in an engineering department with a secondary or adjunct appointment in a medical department. Areas of interest include:

  • Neural interfaces
  • Neuroprostheses
  • Neurorobotics
  • Neural signal processing
  • Brain-computer interfaces
  • Neuromodulation
  • Implantable systems
  • Neuro-biocompatibility
  • Neuromorphic computing/bioinspired AI

Specific areas of high interest include implantable cortical brain-computer interfaces, implanted spinal neuromodulation in humans, and hardware/software design/optimization of neurotechnology.

Responsibilities

  • Establish and maintain an internationally recognized, extramurally supported research program
  • Develop and teach engineering courses at undergraduate and graduate levels
  • Conduct collaborative research across engineering and medical disciplines
  • Engage in service activities within the University and professional communities
  • Train Ph.D. students and lead a high-impact, fully funded research program
  • Pursue clinical trials, entrepreneurship, and industry collaborations (encouraged)

Requirements

  • Ph.D., Sc.D., or M.D. with research experience in neural engineering or closely aligned fields
  • Demonstrated track record of high-impact research (publications, extramural funding)
  • Strong potential (Assistant Professor) or established record (Associate Professor) of teaching effectiveness
  • Evidence of preparedness to engage diverse constituents in research, teaching, and service
  • Commitment to developing an independent, extramurally supported research program
