Assistant, Associate or Full Professor of Bioengineering: Biomaterials (1 Position)
About the Role
The Department of Bioengineering at the Phil and Penny Knight Campus for Accelerating Scientific Impact, University of Oregon, invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor level in the area of Biomaterials. This position is part of a bold initiative to accelerate the translation of scientific discoveries into innovations that improve lives, with a focus on interdisciplinary collaboration, industry engagement, and experiential training.
Responsibilities
- Conduct innovative research in biomaterials, including but not limited to polymer chemistry, biomaterials design, functional polymer synthesis, biomimetic and bio-derived materials, drug delivery systems, tissue engineering scaffolds, and materials for regenerative medicine and medical devices.
- Develop and teach courses in bioengineering, contributing to the department's academic programs.
- Mentor and advise undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral trainees, fostering an inclusive and supportive environment.
- Secure extramural funding to support research initiatives and contribute to the department's growth.
- Engage in collaborative research and industry partnerships to advance translational applications in bioengineering.
- Contribute to service activities within the department, university, and professional societies.
Qualifications
- Doctorate in Engineering, Biology, Human Physiology, Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science, Materials Science, or a related discipline from an accredited institution.
- Evidence of successful mentoring of trainees at any level.
- Record of research excellence in bioengineering materials, polymers, biomaterials, regenerative medicine, medical devices, tissue engineering, or related areas, as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications and extramural funding.
- Demonstrated commitment to fostering an inclusive environment through research, teaching, mentoring, or service.
Preferred Qualifications
- Nationally recognized track record of scientific achievement, including an outstanding publication record and external indicators relevant to seniority.
- Expertise in bioengineering materials, including polymers, biomimetic or bio-derived materials, drug delivery systems, tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, or medical devices.
- Experience developing innovative materials-based approaches for translational bioengineering applications.
- Experience working in complex, multi-stakeholder environments and building successful interfaces with academia, industry, and government.
- Demonstrated ability to attract funding from large government agencies, foundations, industry, and philanthropy.
- Experience translating research discoveries into applications that improve human health.
- Success in diversifying the pipeline of participants in science training and careers.
- Demonstrated success in teaching using evidence-based pedagogical methods.
- Service contributions and leadership in academia, research societies, government, and/or industry relevant to seniority.
About the Department
The Department of Bioengineering is the largest academic unit within the Knight Campus, which has recently expanded its research and educational facilities with the opening of a state-of-the-art BioFoundry. The campus is dedicated to advancing research partnerships, industry engagement, and experiential training for the next generation of scientists, engineers, and entrepreneurs. Faculty expertise spans regenerative medicine, human performance, biofunctional materials, medical devices, neural engineering, and synthetic biology.
