We seek an outstanding individual for a non-tenure track twelve-month faculty position as an Assistant Professor of the Practice in our growing Biotechnology program at the University of Kansas, Edwards Campus in Overland Park. Exceptionally qualified candidates may be considered at advanced levels.

About the Role

The successful candidate will have a professional record in biochemistry, forensic science, and teaching, along with exceptional communication skills and a strong commitment to educating and developing future scientists. The ideal candidate will have a developed teaching philosophy and a demonstrated desire to inspire students and encourage lifelong learning in biotechnology.

This position reports to the Director of the Biotechnology Program and supports the Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology degree and its associated minors: Pre-health Professions, Discovery and Innovation in Biotechnology, and Forensic Science. The appointment is a Fiscal Year (12-month) position with an initial term of 3 years, teaching 3 classes each fall and spring semester and 2 courses each summer semester. Subsequent appointments may be offered contingent upon a satisfactory performance evaluation and approval of the Dean of the School of Professional Studies.

This position serves the education needs of a Johnson County Education Research Triangle (JCERT) program, with specific percentages of effort determined annually.

Responsibilities

  • Teaching (80%):
    • Teach eight undergraduate courses per academic year, including three courses in fall and spring semesters and two courses in summer semesters.
    • Develop and update curricula, design engaging instruction, and manage virtual and in-person classrooms.
    • Evaluate student performance through exams, quizzes, assignments, projects, and presentations, and use assessments to foster student growth.
    • Ensure curricula remain current and relevant by engaging with the field and external organizations.
    • Adhere to School of Professional Studies, Edwards Campus, and university policies and procedures.
    • Courses may include:
      • BSCI 300 Research Methods in Biotechnology
      • BTEC 475 Applied Separation Science & Quantitative Analysis
      • BTEC 430 Evidence Handling and Testimony in the Courts
      • BTEC 520 Forensic Techniques I
      • BTEC 530 Forensic Techniques II
  • Professional Service (20%):
    • Provide academic and curricular leadership advice to the department.
    • Engage in professional development in teaching, leadership, and field specialty.
    • Advise students academically and professionally, and monitor student progression and well-being.
    • Promote student recruitment and retention initiatives.
    • Contribute to decisions related to educational quality, program marketing, and the Biotechnology program’s role within the School of Professional Studies and the University of Kansas.
    • Support student, faculty, and staff well-being to foster a positive working environment.
    • Serve as a liaison between the Biotechnology program and regional biotechnology companies, educational institutions, professional societies, and advisory boards.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Biology or a related discipline.
  • Practical experience as a professional scientist, analyst, technician, or similar role in a biotechnology-related company and/or forensic science agency.
  • Years of related professional experience required for each rank:
    • Assistant Professor of the Practice: 3-5 years
    • Associate Professor of the Practice: 6-15 years
    • Professor of the Practice: 16+ years
  • Evidence of effective teaching in the biological sciences at a college or university level.
