About the role

The Eligibility Specialist (Assistance Payments Worker) strengthens Michigan families by determining eligibility for public assistance, assessing needs, providing information and referrals, communicating MDHHS expectations and goals, and guiding families toward self‑sufficiency. The position supports the MDHHS mission to promote a healthy, safe, and stable environment for residents and to foster a diverse, respectful workplace.

Responsibilities

• Ensure each applicant receives the correct type and level of public assistance for which they are eligible.
• Assess the needs of individuals/families and provide appropriate information, referrals, or contacts to relevant agencies.
• Inform families about the expectations and goals of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS).
• Encourage and guide families in their efforts to become self‑supporting.

Schedule

The first six months of the role are required to be 100 % in‑person. After that period, a hybrid or remote work arrangement may be available.
