Assessing Democracy In Vitro, In Vivo, and In Actu and the Role of Democratic Theory Today

About the role

The Institute of Future Media, Democracy and Society (FuJo) at Dublin City University invites applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher position. The successful candidate will work on the SCALEDEM project, which is funded by the European Research Council. SCALEDEM is a project about scaling up democratic deliberation. The project investigates how to maximise the benefits of citizen deliberation for policy making and democracy. The project is led by Professor Jane Suiter and involves a team of researchers based in DCU.

Responsibilities

• Conduct research in the field of democratic deliberation, including designing and implementing experimental and survey-based research.
• Contribute to the development of theoretical frameworks and empirical analyses.
• Analyse quantitative and qualitative data.
• Publish research findings in high-quality academic journals and present at international conferences.
• Contribute to the dissemination of research findings to policy and practitioner audiences.
• Work collaboratively with the project team and contribute to the intellectual life of the Institute.

Requirements

• A PhD in Political Science, Sociology, Psychology, Communication Studies, or a related discipline.
• A strong record of, or potential for, publishing research in peer-reviewed journals.
• Experience in quantitative research methods, including survey design and statistical analysis.
• Experience in experimental research methods.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Qualifications

• PhD completed or near completion.
• Demonstrated expertise in deliberative democracy, political behaviour, or public opinion research.
• Experience with data analysis software (e.g., R, Stata, SPSS).

Skills

• Strong project management and organisational skills.
• Ability to meet deadlines and manage competing priorities.
• Capacity to engage with policy and practice communities.

Pay

Salary will be at the appropriate point on the DCU Postdoctoral Researcher salary scale in line with qualifications and experience.

Schedule

The position is full-time and fixed-term for 24 months, with the possibility of extension.
