Assembly Test Technician 1

As a result of the combination of the BD Biosciences and Diagnostic Solutions business with Waters Corporation (NYSE: WAT), this role is with Waters, a global leader in life sciences dedicated to accelerating the benefits of pioneering science through analytical technologies, informatics, and service. Waters collaborates with laboratories worldwide to advance medicine, food and water safety, and patient outcomes.

About the role

Performs both production assembly operations and complete system analysis, testing, and performance optimization. Provides basic electrical, mechanical, or software troubleshooting to determine problems in non-functioning test equipment and offers solutions based on pass/fail criteria of instrument performance. Acts as a subject matter expert in instrument functional performance and escalates issues associated with instrument testing operations.

Responsibilities

• Build, integrate, and understand the entire assembly process and requirements for any instrument in the production area.
• Perform functional and release testing on at least one moderately complex instrument, analyzing results to determine pass/fail and providing solutions for failures.
• Optimize system performance, including precision of movement and light systems, using pass/fail data results.
• Identify defects and recommend design and process improvements.
• Read and interpret drawings, work instructions, and workmanship standards.
• Train associates on mechanical and testing activities.
• Complete production activities in compliance with regulatory requirements, safety, and quality expectations.
• Interface with Manufacturing Engineering, Quality, Planning, and Purchasing as needed.
• Perform standard material handling for instrument raw materials and sub-assemblies.
• Maintain a safe, clean, and efficient work environment through housekeeping responsibilities.
• Follow Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), BD housekeeping, and safety policies.
• Work overtime as required to meet business needs.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• AA degree in mechatronics or relevant field with 0 years’ experience, or 5 years’ experience in electrical, mechanical, or software troubleshooting.
• Capability to support testing for moderately complex instruments.
• Proven leadership skills, including mentoring, coaching, and developing associates.
• Strong ability to drive continuous improvement (Lean Manufacturing) through participation in initiatives like Blitzes, Kaizen Action Sheets, and safety projects.
• Fundamental knowledge of mechanical tools (e.g., torque drivers, gauges).
• Proficiency in reading and interpreting drawings and measuring dimensions.
• Ability to manage time across multiple production orders within allotted time standards.
• Effective teamwork and collaboration to achieve common goals.
• Understanding of Quality procedures and continuous improvement philosophies.
• Ability to adapt to frequent assignment changes.

Skills

• Proficiency in English (reading, writing, analyzing charts, following diagrams, basic arithmetic).
• Basic PC skills in a Windows environment.
• Strong math and analytical skills.
• Independent judgment for planning, decision-making, troubleshooting, and problem-solving.
• Proven leadership and communication skills.

Schedule

US BD 1st Shift: 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM (United States of America). Minimum of 4 days in-office presence per week for most roles.

Pay

Hourly rate range: $19.40 - $31.10 USD. Salary is influenced by role requirements, location, labor laws, and Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) requirements.
