Assembler
Job Purpose
Following written and visual instructions, Assemblers use electrical and mechanical knowledge and skills to assemble locomotive parts and components. Operations include wiring, mechanical assembly, fabricating, and repair work.
Key Job Elements
- Run wiring throughout cab unit and underframe
- Measure, cut, and lug wires to proper length
- Evaluate continuity of wires and cables
- Fit, assemble, connect and install system components
- Use stripping and crimping pliers, voltmeters, jigs, measurement instruments, hand and power tools
- Align major components
- Assist welders with prep, repair, and grinding weld spatter
- Mask locomotives for paint
- Utilize computer to access instructional documents.
Essential and Physical Activities
- Strength – Must be able to lift and carry up to 35lbs, push and pull up to 50lb
- Motion – Constant walking, Frequent and sustained bending, crouching, stopping, kneeing, squatting and overhead reaching and climbing ladders
Vision/Hearing Requirements
- Must be able to follow written and verbal instructions and hear audible alarms
Work Environment
- Works on varied surfaces, concrete floors, and gravel, rail car and locomotive floors
- Works at varied heights from floor level to tops of locomotives
- Works in confined spaces
- Non-temperature control environment, all weather conditions with high noise and high dust levels
Safety
- Safety Sensitive positions because it works in and around active tracks, rail cars, locomotives, and other moving equipment
- Employee must abide by all safety protocols, health/medical screenings and utilize all required PPE
Education / Training
- High School Diploma or equivalent required
Qualifications And Experience
- Ability to read and interpret schematics, wire running lists, blueprints
- Ability to use various hand and power tools and measuring devices
- Ability to work in a Windows environment to look up assembly instructions/reference documents
