About the role
The Experienced Asphalt Plant Operator will work in Walbec’s asphalt manufacturing plants under the direction of the Foreman. The role involves operating, maintaining, and repairing equipment used to produce asphalt mix for paving operations while learning to operate related construction equipment safely and efficiently.
Responsibilities
- Follow all safety requirements to maintain a safe work environment.
- Maintain a clean and orderly work site, including shoveling, sweeping, and skid steer operation.
- Monitor equipment operation for consistent flow of materials to produce high-quality, in-spec hot mix asphalt for internal and external customers.
- Load out trucks for material distribution using computerized operations.
- Feed aggregate materials into the asphalt plant.
- Replace wear components on plant equipment (including cutting, welding, fabricating).
- Work on elevated platforms and in confined spaces.
- Monitor aggregate gradations and moisture contents to ensure material consistency.
- Monitor hot mix asphalt test results to verify finished materials meet job specifications.
- Use equipment such as welders (Stick, MIG), oxy-acetylene torches, pneumatic jackhammers, power tools (drill, grinder, impact wrench), front-end loader, skid steer loader, aerial man lift, telehandler lift, water truck, telescoping boom truck, and dump truck.
- Demonstrate willingness to learn new tasks, perform varied duties, and work as part of a team.
Requirements
- 5+ years of relevant work experience preferred.
- Valid Driver’s License and satisfactory driving record.
- Must be punctual and dependable.
- Ability to work varied hours, including nights, early mornings, and weekends as needed.
- Capacity to work in variable weather conditions and dirty or dusty environments.
- Ability to work in confined spaces and on elevated platforms, including heights over 50 feet.
- Mechanical, fabricating, and repair experience preferred.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Must successfully pass aptitude tests.
- High School diploma or GED equivalent preferred.
- Prior experience and/or education in a related field preferred.
- Must be a member of the appropriate trade union or willing to become a union member (assistance provided by HR).
