Blythe Development, headquartered in Charlotte, NC, is a licensed general contractor specializing in site work, road construction, and golf course construction in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. We are 100% employee-owned and operate in clearing, grading, storm drainage, sanitary sewer, waterline, curb and gutter, sidewalk, concrete paving, retaining walls, culverts, bridges, stone base, and asphalt paving. Blythe Brothers Asphalt Company provides asphalt services for Blythe Development Co.

About the role

We are seeking an Asphalt Plant Operator to join our team. This individual is responsible for the start-up and operation of hot mix asphalt mixing plants, including placing raw aggregate and liquid asphalt materials through the mixing drum for storage in silos until load-out on trucks for delivery to job sites.

Responsibilities

  • Operate plant and load trucks
  • Assist in ensuring all safety policies are followed and implemented
  • Maintain all required paperwork
  • Communicate with road crews on an hourly and daily basis
  • Assist with plant maintenance
  • Operate loader when needed
  • Help maintain cleanliness of the plant site
  • Perform incidental work items and duties included within other crafts

Requirements

  • Must be willing to work nights and weekends
  • Able to read, comprehend manuals, and directives
  • Able to adjust to heights
  • Must be willing to help out as needed
  • Able to calculate basic math
  • Basic computer knowledge
  • Must have a positive attitude and be eager to learn new tasks
  • Welding experience is a plus
  • Electrical/Electronics experience is a plus

Qualifications

  • Three (3) to five (5) years or more of industry-related experience, with an emphasis on asphalt plant operations
  • A high school diploma or general education degree (GED) is preferred
  • Must be able to understand work directions and communicate effectively with job site supervisors and fellow employees

Physical Demands

  • Constant physical effort, including standing, during a regular work shift of at least eight hours per day
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods and stoop, bend, and crouch as required
  • Ability to lift and carry, on a frequent basis, at least 50 pounds personally, and up to 150 pounds with assistance
  • Maintain constant alertness to multiple concurrent activities on the construction site
  • Must be able to climb on and off heavy mobile equipment safely

Work Environment

  • Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Periodically exposed to high levels of noise, grease, and dust associated with construction projects
  • Regularly works near heavy equipment and moving machinery
  • May involve exposure to substances commonly found on construction sites such as form oil, grease, curing compounds, gasoline, diesel fuel, and ready-mixed concrete
