Asphalt Plant Foreman - Raleigh, NC

About the role

Fred Smith Company is currently searching for an experienced Asphalt Plant Foreman for our Raleigh plants. The successful candidate will have one to three years of experience with the techniques required for producing and manufacturing various designs of asphalt.

Responsibilities

• Create an atmosphere whereby subordinates are encouraged to improve their skill set and maintain a high level of morale for themselves and other employees.
• Ensure crew starts working on time and works the number of hours for which they are paid.
• Assist and direct crew in the following areas: using equipment in a safe and proper manner, improving job performance, controlling cost, improving quality of work, increasing productivity, improving communications, and performing housekeeping of the project.
• Participate in the periodic evaluation of all assigned personnel; discussing their contributions to the company as well as their development.
• Supervise and direct the activities of assigned personnel in the performance of their duties, including proper orientation, technique, use, and maintenance of equipment.
• Ensure all new personnel receive proper orientation to acquaint them with company policies, procedures, and safety requirements.
• Develop a cooperative working relationship with all operators, project managers, superintendents, and other foremen.
• Cooperate and comply with Human Resources and Risk Management departments, being knowledgeable about all aspects of EEO and safety; ensure compliance among all subordinates.
• Conduct continuous evaluation of cost/yields, materials, plans and schedules, salaries, promotions, job assignments, equipment changes and needs, and quality control; report any problems, changes, or recommendations to the Operations Manager or Superintendent.
• Ensure all work complies with local laws, ordinances, and EPA regulations concerning the manufacture of asphalt materials and related activities.
• Maintain close contact and a good working relationship with the general public, engineers, inspectors, and customers to facilitate job progress and promote a positive company image.
• Perform equipment inspections, request maintenance or repairs as needed.
• Make and maintain all required reports, verify their correctness, and transmit them promptly to the Operations Manager or Superintendent.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Must have a valid driver’s license with a positive driving history.
• Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen.
• High School diploma or GED required.
• Thorough knowledge of the specialized field of asphalt, extensive computer knowledge, and the ability to use a variety of precision measuring instruments.
• Working knowledge of mix design and quality control associated with this field.
• Ability to understand specifications and maintenance/repairs associated with supervisory responsibilities.

Qualifications

• One to three years of experience with asphalt production and manufacturing techniques.

• Climb onto and into vehicles, stoop, kneel, crouch, lift, and grasp.
• Sit, stand, and walk for sustained periods of time and long distances.
• Express ideas by means of the spoken word and perceive sounds to receive detailed information through oral communications.
