OMNI is involved in heavy highway construction as well as private and commercial site construction, primarily manufacturing and placing asphalt for roads, city streets, and parking lots. About the role

The Asphalt Laborer performs various duties on construction and/or paving projects, generally working in a utility capacity by transferring from one task to another as demands require.

Responsibilities

  • Properly follow all company policies and OSHA/MSHA regulations for safe working procedures and environment; report any problems to the Foreperson, Superintendent, Safety Manager, or Human Resources.
  • Assist construction/paving crew with duties such as shoveling, raking, running a wheelbarrow, and safely backing/dumping trucks into the paver.
  • Signal operators of construction equipment to facilitate alignment, movement, and materials with a shovel.
  • Follow direction of Foreman regarding daily tasks and expectations for each specific project or jobsite.
  • Operate small power tools such as a jackhammer when required.
  • Dig, spread, and level construction materials.
  • Lift, carry, and hold material, tools, and supplies.
  • Assist in the placement, moving, and dismantling of signs, barricades, cones, and other traffic control devices.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED is preferred.
  • Previous related experience in the construction field is preferred.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Must pass pre-employment drug screen and criminal background check.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook.
  • Willingness to work independently within a team environment and assist with other duties as required.
  • Report to work dressed appropriately and ready to begin at the designated start time.
  • Regular and consistent attendance; must be willing to work nights, weekends, and holidays when necessary.
  • Must be willing to travel and work away from home when required.
  • Wear personal protective equipment (PPE) in designated operations and production areas as required by OSHA/MSHA, Company Policy, and job site requirements.

Skills

  • Knowledge of materials, methods, and tools involved in construction and paving.
  • Ability to read, write, and perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to use equipment and tools properly and safely.
  • Ability to recognize hazardous conditions.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions from supervisors to complete assigned tasks.
  • Willingness and ability to adapt to changes in circumstances, tasks, customer needs, and other conditions.
  • Ability to cope well in stressful environments and communicate professionally.
  • Strong dedication to meeting the needs and expectations of internal and external customers.

Physical Requirements

  • Able to regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to regularly talk, hear, walk, stand, bend, and reach.
  • Ability to occasionally use hands and fingers to manipulate objects or controls, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, and crouch.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.

Work Environment

  • Occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, and outside weather conditions.
  • Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
  • Variety of noise levels, adverse weather conditions, and complex job sites are expected daily.
  • Proper clothing and PPE are required to ensure safety for yourself and others in all conditions.
  • For non-field duties, the environment is typical of an office setting with quiet to moderate noise levels.
