About the role
An Asphalt Distributor Operator is a skilled construction professional who drives and operates a specialized truck to apply liquid asphalt, emulsions, or tack coat to road surfaces, parking lots, and driveways. They are responsible for setting the pace of paving operations, controlling spray bars, ensuring uniform material coverage, and heating materials to proper temperatures.
Responsibilities
- Driving the distributor truck and managing the computerized or manual spray systems to apply tack or prime coats.
- Operating the Broom Sweeper to sweep/clean the roadway prior to the application of tack.
- Ensuring even, precise, and consistent distribution of asphalt products at designated rates.
- Cleaning spray bars, pumps, and tanks; monitoring burners to maintain material temperature; and performing daily safety inspections (pre-trip/post-trip).
- Performing minor servicing and maintenance on equipment and referring major problems to the supervisor.
- Following strict safety protocols for handling hot asphalt and hazardous materials.
- Operating and maneuvering equipment as necessary to load, transport, and unload construction materials and other related equipment by manipulating various gears, levers, and special attachments.
- Possessing a solid understanding of all aspects of the paving industry including preparatory work, grades, drainage, paving patterns, aggregate size, job specifications, oil consistencies, compaction, and other details related to asphalt paving.
- Performing other related duties such as shovel work, setting string line, and adding or removing screed extensions.
Physical requirements
- Frequently required to sit, climb, and use hands to finger, handle, or feel.
- Frequently required to stand, walk, crawl, kneel, bend, and reach with hands and arms above their shoulders.
- Must occasionally lift and/or move from 10 to 50 lbs.
- Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
- Ability to work in demanding weather conditions including heat, cold, and dust.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- Class B Commercial Driver's License with Tanker endorsement required.
- Must possess an acceptable driving record.
- 3 years of experience.
- Ability to operate additional heavy equipment is a plus.
- Able to pass required pre-employment drug test as well as random testing during employment.
