About the role

The educational interpreter facilitates communication among deaf and hearing persons in an educational environment through the use of techniques developed for communication between deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing persons. The interpreter serves as a member of the educational team, working with staff and students, both hearing and deaf, to minimize linguistic, cultural, and physical barriers.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate communication between deaf and hearing individuals in educational settings.
  • Work closely with staff and students to ensure effective communication and understanding.
  • Minimize linguistic, cultural, and physical barriers in educational environments.
  • Provide support and assistance to students and staff as needed.

Requirements

  • 3-5 years experience as an Educational Interpreter.
  • Bachelor's degree in Sign Language Interpreting.
  • Licensed by NHED with an Educational Interpreter/Transliterator endorsement (1911).
  • MUST be able to interpret in an educational setting at the minimum.
  • IIPA level required for NHED.

Qualifications

  • Must have a strong understanding of sign language and its nuances.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of educational policies and procedures.

Skills, Knowledge And Abilities

  • Able to interpret in an educational setting at the minimum.
  • IIPA level required for NHED.
