ASD Categorical Teacher (1.0 FTE) - 2 Positions available

About the Role

Provide special education students with appropriate learning activities and experiences designed to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Responsible for planning instruction and adaptation of the general/special education curriculum to accommodate students in the learning process. Function as the case manager for students with individualized education programs (IEPs) and oversee their compliance.

Responsibilities

• Implement and instruct the established Grosse Pointe Curriculum, including culturally diverse themes in lessons and instruction.
• Integrate technology with instruction.
• Implement instructional activities that contribute to a climate where students are actively engaged in meaningful learning experiences.
• Identify, select, and modify instructional resources to meet the needs of students with varying backgrounds, learning styles, and special needs.
• Assist in assessing changing curricular needs and offer plans for improvement.
• Maintain effective and efficient record-keeping procedures.
• Provide a positive environment in which students are encouraged to be actively engaged in the learning process.
• Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with students, parents, and other professionals on a regular basis.
• Collaborate with peers to enhance the instructional environment.
• Model professional and ethical standards when dealing with students, parents, peers, and the community.
• Ensure that student growth and achievement is continuous and appropriate for age group, subject area, and/or program classification.
• Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, parents, and schools.
• Assume responsibility for meeting course and school-wide student performance goals.
• Demonstrate gains in student performance.
• Meet professional obligations through efficient work habits such as meeting deadlines and honoring schedules.
• Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by a supervisor.

Requirements

• Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate.
• Current Michigan Special Education endorsement (any) and willingness to obtain SV endorsement if hired.
• SV endorsement preferred.
• Significant experience in special education.
• Extensive knowledge of developmental milestones.
• Related academic endorsements preferred.
• Quality assessment skills.
• Crisis Prevention training preferred.

Physical Demands

• Prolonged periods standing and walking throughout school and classroom.
• Must be able to lift up to 45 pounds at a time.
• Must be able to assist students who have physical difficulties.
• Occasional bending, kneeling, sitting, standing, and climbing stairs.
• Prolonged periods sitting and working on the computer to complete necessary paperwork.

Pay

Salary is based on the GPEA CBA, which may or may not recognize previous professional teaching experience.
