About the role
The ASC Instrument Technician is responsible for understanding sterilization and high-level disinfection technologies including industry standardized principles and practice in sterilization and disinfection. This role works out of the surgery center sterilizing and disinfecting the instruments used.
Responsibilities
- Correlate clinical information with patient’s care under the direction of the Clinical Leader/Registered Nurse.
- Respond to patient care needs in an emergency situation and under direction of Clinical Leader/Registered Nurse.
- Initiate and implement basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation (BCLS) under the direction of the Clinical Leader/Registered Nurse.
- Absorb and orient the patient and family to the patient care environment and facility routines.
- Provide appropriate interventions related to safety issues according to job position, role and responsibilities and assigned by the Clinical Leader/Registered Nurse.
- Function as an Instrument Processing Technician under the direction of the Clinical Leader/Registered Nurse.
- Knowledge of sterilization procedures, aseptic technique, and maintenance and care of instruments and equipment.
- Understand and use sterilizers, high-level disinfectors, instrument washers, and other designated processors.
- Complete all documentation to ensure the availability of accurate and up to date information in accordance with established standards.
- Clean and/or disinfect instruments and equipment after use and return it to the proper area, in appropriate sequence, for storage and/or processing.
- Differentiate sterilization and disinfection methods required for specific instruments and equipment.
- Understand use, function, interpretation, documentation, and record-keeping of chemical and biological indicators related to instrument and equipment sterilization and low, intermediate, and high-level disinfection processes.
- Complete all documentation to ensure the availability of accurate and up to date information in accordance with established standards.
- Clean, wrap, sterilize, and disinfect instruments and equipment and maintain the functions of the instrument processing area/department.
- Maintain area/department in an orderly/organized fashion.
- Continue assigned daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly routines, including requirements with reports, logs and related documentation.
- Assist teammates with daily preparation for current and future facility schedules (pulling cases and assembling supplies) as assigned.
- Assist in room turnover when needed and as assigned.
- Adhere to established facility safety requirements and procedures to ensure a safe working environment.
- Complete all employee/patient incident documentation in a thorough and timely manner, as required by facility policy and according to management guidance.
- PRACTICE INFECTION CONTROL AND STANDARD PRECAUTIONS AS INSTRUCTED OR TRAINED.
- Absorb and prepare the operating room/procedure room for surgery/procedures as directed.
Qualifications
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Prior experience as a surgical technologist/procedure technologist preferred.
- Successful completion of BCLS Course within 90 days of employment required or documentation of current BCLS certification.
- Certification in instrument processing is preferred.
- Must be able to travel to all sites if/when necessary.
