About Community Coalition

Founded in 1990 by now-Mayor of LA Karen Bass, Community Coalition (CoCo) was created as a community-driven response to the crack-cocaine epidemic that devastated South LA. Founded with the belief that South LA’s primarily Black and Latine youth and families are their community’s greatest asset and protective factor, CoCo’s mission is to help transform the social and economic conditions in South LA that foster addiction, crime, violence, and poverty by building a community institution that involves thousands in creating, influencing, and changing public policy.

As part of this mission, arts and culture strategies are leveraged to civically involve residents, communicate information around critical initiatives, and provide a platform for residents to build community and experience joy and healing via the arts. CoCo has a long track record of hosting large-scale multidisciplinary events featuring known performers (NoName, Dckwrth) while also providing opportunities for local artists.
