Arts and Culture Multimedia Producer
This position is grant-funded for two years, with a potential extension of a third year. Work will be performed primarily on-site at the Chase Tower in Milwaukee. Hybrid work options may be available, with specifics discussed during the interview process.
About the role
WUWM is hiring an Arts and Culture Multimedia Producer to develop stories for broadcast and digital platforms about arts and culture news, community-related events, and issues affecting Milwaukee and the surrounding region. The producer will develop special projects, including events and collaborations with other producers and reporters at WUWM and local public media stations. In their second year, they may develop a special digital or broadcast series.
WUWM has the largest public radio newsroom in southeastern Wisconsin, covering local issues and running special reporting initiatives on environment, education, race and ethnicity, and housing. Their local show and podcast, “Lake Effect,” brings community conversations about the people, places, and organizations shaping Milwaukee. WUWM won 44 awards in 2025 for productions like “Status Pending,” “Swing State of the Union,” and “Bubbler Talk.”
Responsibilities
- Research, prepare, and report balanced, issue-oriented, and analytical stories for news, public affairs programs, and digital platforms.
- Apply editorial judgment to select sources, conduct and record interviews, and write scripts.
- Edit audio and video to create broadcast spots, features, talk show segments, digital articles, and social media posts, including vertical video.
- Contribute to content by interviewing sources, writing features/spots, and completing production tasks for audio features, talk show segments, digital articles, and social media content centered in arts and culture and occasional breaking news.
- Stay abreast of developments in arts, policy, and culture in Milwaukee and Wisconsin, maintaining contacts for follow-up stories and researching topic areas for in-depth reports.
- Collaborate with the communications team and editors on long-term and short-term multimedia projects.
- Develop production strategy for programs across broadcast and digital platforms.
- Collaborate with other content creators in pre- to post-production processes, preparing materials and handling logistics for broadcast and digital publications.
- Produce, develop, and edit content, including identifying topics, themes, guests, conducting interviews, writing, and integrating content for multimedia platforms.
- Maintain familiarity with studio equipment and production technology.
- Perform daily operational activities for live and pre-recorded content, and may direct the editorial and creative process of production activities.
- Schedule and direct operational activities for content production, including live or recorded studio and field productions.
This position requires the ability to work on weekdays, evenings, and occasional weekends, as well as reliable transportation for off-site reporting and interviews.
Requirements
- Demonstrated ability to discover and produce in-depth, issue-oriented stories for broadcast and digital platforms.
- A bachelor’s degree and one year of related experience, or 5 years of experience in broadcast journalism.
Preferred Qualifications
- Two years of experience working with or covering diverse populations, particularly in the arts and culture community.
- Demonstrated familiarity with Southeastern Wisconsin issues.
- Demonstrated knowledge of WUWM and/or public radio.
- Audio editing experience.
- Vertical video production experience.
Pay
$60,000 - $65,000 (Salary will be determined by finalist's experience, training, education, and equity-based factors.)
