This position plays a critical role in the daily operations and maintenance for the Mobility Test Complex (MTC) at the Arctic Regions Test Center (ARTC) in Delta Junction, Alaska. The Heavy Equipment Operator provides essential on-the-ground support to ensure that test track surfaces and range environments are properly prepared, maintained, and secured for military and civilian mobility testing.

Responsibilities

  • Operate a variety of heavy, specialized, tactical, and utility equipment, including front-end loaders, skid steers, dump trucks, tractors with various utility and agricultural attachments, military tactical vehicles, all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), snow makers, sweeper trucks, and water trucks.
  • Perform preventative checks and maintenance services before, during, and after vehicle/equipment use.
  • Maintain various road surfaces at the MTC for customer use.
  • Assist in performing regular maintenance and repairs on various vehicles and equipment.
  • Document time worked, parts requests, system codes, and maintenance performed.
  • Learn to operate vehicles and equipment that may not be familiar.
  • Use “down-time” effectively to benefit test operations, self, and company.
  • Deliver quality products to customers and be responsive to their needs.
  • Maintain own tools to the minimum requirement set by the company.
  • Work safely to prevent harm to people, property, and the environment.

Requirements

  • Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have 1 year of experience as a heavy equipment operator/mechanic operating and troubleshooting various problems and repairing heavy equipment, including diesel/gas engines, automotive electrical systems, and air/hydraulic systems, OR be a graduate of a recognized trade school with 6 months of experience.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license without special restrictions.
  • Must be able to speak, write, read, and understand English.
  • Must have dependable transportation and a dependable means of communication.
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screening and physical, as well as periodic retests.
  • Must be capable of working in extreme weather conditions, including winter temperatures colder than -40°F.
  • Must be able to lift 75 lbs. unassisted.
  • Must be capable of kneeling, bending, and standing while performing maintenance duties.
  • Must be able to distinguish colors.
  • Must meet physical requirements necessary to perform operations outlined in the SOPs for GFE Maintenance.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain a security clearance prior to employment and maintain it for the duration of employment.
  • Must be willing to work rotating shifts, including day, swing, and night shifts, as well as overtime, sometimes on short notice, to support test missions.
  • Must be able to work up to six days per week and 10 hours per day.

Qualifications (Desirable)

  • Maintenance experience with heavy equipment and tractor/trailers.
  • Ability to become proficient quickly in the operation of large vehicles and equipment.
  • Experience with ABS air brakes, dual-voltage electrical systems, Central Tire Inflation Systems, and welding.
  • Possess a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
  • Military experience.

Pay

$37.16 per hour

Schedule

  • Rotating shifts, including day, swing, and night shifts.
  • Overtime as needed, sometimes on short notice.
  • Up to six days per week and 10 hours per day.
