Art Teacher, Leave Replacement (Crompond)

About the Role

Under the general supervision of the School Principal, the Art Teacher develops students' interest, abilities, talents, and skills for artistic expression and creativity in the visual arts, as well as aesthetic understanding and appreciation by implementing district-approved curriculum.

Responsibilities

• Develops and administers school curriculum consistent with school district goals and objectives.
• Creates lesson plans and instructional materials, translating them into engaging learning experiences.
• Teaches knowledge and skills in art, including crafts, drawing, painting, lettering, design, commercial art, art history, and three-dimensional art to secondary pupils, following the Board of Education’s adopted course of study.
• Provides instruction that helps students develop aesthetic concepts, appreciation, and the ability to make qualitative judgments about art.
• Conducts ongoing assessment of student skills and learning in artistic techniques and expression, modifying instruction to fit individual needs, including those of students with special needs.
• Demonstrates techniques in activities such as drawing, painting, and modeling using standard and teacher-prepared instructional aids.
• Develops instructional plans and organizes class time to provide a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and working time.
• Instructs pupils in the proper care and use of tools and equipment used in art classes.
• Evaluates student performance and growth in knowledge and aesthetic understandings, preparing progress reports.
• Plans and presents art displays and exhibitions to showcase pupils' work for the school and community.
• Organizes and maintains accurate record-keeping, grading, and reporting systems for student activities, achievement, and attendance.
• Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students and parents.
• Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
• Coordinates with other professional staff members, participates in faculty meetings, and serves on committees.
• Selects and requisitions appropriate books, art materials, instructional aids, and other supplies while maintaining inventory records.
• Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and central office administrators.

Requirements

• NYS Certification as an Art Teacher.
• Successful prior teaching experience for the appropriate grade level preferred.

Skills & Knowledge

• Knowledge of Special Education principles, theories, testing, and methods, as well as strategies for maximizing the educational experience of students with special needs.
• Knowledge of differentiated instruction based on student learning styles.
• Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis, and action plan formulation.
• Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
• Ability to use computer network systems and software applications as needed.
• Ability to organize and coordinate work effectively.
• Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
• Ability to engage in self-evaluation regarding performance and professional growth.
• Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others.

Pay

Days 1–20: $130 per diem; Day 20 onward: 1/200 of step placement on the corresponding salary schedule. Salary range: $62,306 – $135,587 (2025/2026).
