Job Description

The Sarah Lawrence College Art of Teaching graduate program is seeking Guest Faculty for a year-long, 10-credit course in the teaching of Mathematics & Technology in Early Childhood and Childhood (birth-6th grade).

The course meets once a week (in person, on campus) for 2.5 hours on Tuesday evenings from 9/8/26-5/4/27 (minus college breaks).

Course Focus

This course will place strong emphasis on students’ own understanding of mathematics, as directly related to the mathematics that they will be teaching in early-childhood and elementary-school classrooms.

The course will focus on core concepts of mathematics teaching and learning: the science of patterns and number relationships. Patterns and functions will serve as the lenses through which students will examine connections and applications of the topics to the early-childhood and childhood school curricula.

Students will develop understandings of the content, concepts, computation, and teaching and learning strategies of mathematics in schools.

Emphasis will be placed on constructivist teaching and learning; inquiry-based learning; problem solving; and mathematical reasoning, connections, and communication.

Students will be exposed to techniques in differentiating instruction that addresses learning differences and the special needs of English-language learners, as well as ways to identify tasks that challenge and augment mathematical understandings.

The use of technology as an integral support for the understanding and application of mathematics will also be a focus of the course.

Each class session will provide students with opportunities to engage in authentic mathematical activities, followed by sharing those experiences and ways to implement similar, engaging mathematical tasks in classrooms.

Seminar Courses

Seminar courses include the seminar class and biweekly meetings with individual students to develop a semester-long independent project—conference work—conducted under the instructor’s guidance.

Application Materials

  • a cover letter
  • CV
  • a statement of teaching philosophy
  • a sample course syllabus if available

Please include a consideration of diversity, equity, inclusion, justice, and belonging in your teaching statement and three professional references who will be contacted for a letter of recommendation upon submission of the candidate’s application.

Required Qualifications

  • A minimum of three years of full-time K-6 teaching experience.
  • Teacher certification is preferred in Early Childhood and/or Childhood Education (birth-6th grade).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States.
  • We are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa at this time.
