Kern Community College District is soliciting applications for part-time, hourly adjunct instructors to teach Art History in the Rising Scholars (Inmate Education) program at off-campus sites, including the California City Correctional Facility and the Tehachapi California Correctional Institution.

About the Role

The successful applicant will provide instruction in a full range of Art History courses, utilizing multiple teaching methodologies in an incarcerated student setting. Assignments may include day, evening, or weekend classes and will require proper clearance to work in a prison facility. This role involves teaching large classes, maintaining subject matter currency, developing and revising curriculum, and using computer and multimedia technology.

Additional duties include participation in student recruitment, articulation of transfer programs for the Visual and Performing Arts department, and collegial engagement in departmental, college, and discipline-specific professional activities.

Responsibilities

  • Teach Art History courses at off-campus correctional facilities, including day, evening, or weekend classes.
  • Develop and revise curriculum using multiple teaching methodologies.
  • Maintain subject matter currency and integrate computer and multimedia technology into instruction.
  • Participate in student recruitment and articulation of transfer programs for the Visual and Performing Arts department.
  • Engage in departmental, college, and discipline-specific professional activities.
  • Assess student learning outcomes and adapt teaching strategies for diverse student populations.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Art History, History of Art and Architecture, or Visual Culture/Visual Studies;
  • OR Bachelor’s degree in Art History AND Master’s degree in History;
  • OR Master’s degree in Art with a recorded emphasis or concentration in Art History;
  • OR Possession of a valid California community college credential authorizing full-time teaching of Art;
  • OR Equivalent combination of education, experience, and accomplishments in the field (candidates must submit an Application for Equivalence form with supporting documents).
  • A demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
  • Ability to work effectively with colleagues and students in a diverse and innovative environment.
  • Ability to develop curriculum, including for different modalities (e.g., in-person, hybrid).
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of computers and willingness to explore new technologies for instructional benefit.
  • Commitment to the California community college mission.

Pay

$67.00 hourly. Hourly rate may vary based on assignment type and the Lecture Hour Equivalent (LHE) formula. For details, refer to the CCA collective bargaining agreement or your college HR office.
