Responsibilities

  • Commission Artwork | Source and manage a global network of freelance artists, providing clear, iterative direction while building strong, lasting relationships.
  • Lead Visual Development | Help define and execute the creative direction for Booster Fun, Universes Beyond, and Secret Lair releases in partnership with senior art directors.
  • Drive Collectibility | Create visually striking, highly desirable alternate card treatments that elevate the Magic brand and excite collectors.
  • Concept & Brainstorm | Contribute bold visual ideas in early concept development, helping shape product vision through collaborative ideation.
  • Ensure Quality | Review and approve final artwork to meet Magic’s standards for excellence, consistency, and production specifications.
  • Collaborate Cross-Functionally | Partner with designers, producers, editors, and external IP holders to bring cohesive products to life.
  • Translate IPs | Work with internal teams and external partners to authentically integrate Magic IP and Universes Beyond worlds into collectible formats.

Qualifications

  • Art Direction Experience | 2+ years in commercial art direction, visual development, or a related field.
  • Strong Portfolio | Demonstrated experience commissioning and directing illustration across styles, genres, or formats.
  • Visual Storytelling | Excellent taste and the ability to curate and guide compelling visuals across a wide range of aesthetics.
  • Artist Advocacy | A passion for discovering and championing diverse artistic voices through intentional commissioning.
  • Cultural Awareness | Ability to translate audience tastes, trends, and cultural signals into resonant visual ideas.
  • Clear Communication | Thoughtful, respectful feedback skills paired with strong organization and attention to detail.
  • Collaborative Mindset | Comfort working within fast-paced, team-based workflows.
  • Technical Skills | Fluency in Adobe Photoshop; proficiency in Illustrator, InDesign, and Microsoft Office.
  • Creative Spirit | Curiosity, boldness, and a willingness to experiment—balanced with strong creative judgment.

Pay

The pay transparency range for this role is listed below. The hiring range will vary based on factors such as experience, skills, location and market conditions. Additionally, employees may be eligible for annual and long-term incentives as part of their overall compensation package.

Pay Range
$115,800 - $173,700 USD
