Art and Art History Lecturer Pool - Pictorial Art
About the role
The Department of Art and Art History at San José State University is searching for part-time Pictorial faculty to run rigorous skill-based courses, encourage critical thinking and iterative concept development for various levels of our course offerings. We seek candidates with an active and contemporary art practice and a desire to have a voice in curriculum development.
Responsibilities
- Teach a broad range of courses in the Pictorial Art area including but not necessarily limited to: Two-Dimensional Design, Color, Beginning and Representational Drawing, Expressive and Advanced Drawing, Beginning through Advanced Painting and possibly Life Drawing and Figure Painting as well as some aspects of printmaking.
- Have some familiarity with digital processes.
- Share curriculum development and graduate and undergraduate student review responsibilities.
- Demonstrate awareness and experience understanding the needs of a student population of great diversity – in age, abilities, cultural background, ethnicity, religion, economic background, primary language, sexual orientation, gender identity, and academic preparation – through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies and advisement.
Requirements
The successful candidate will have demonstrated the ability to teach all levels of 2-D classes through a solid foundation in visual, analytical, and communication skills. The candidate should have an understanding of, and abilities in perceptual based drawing and painting as well as the concerns of process-oriented abstraction, painting and drawing in the expanded field, and familiarity with digital pictorial processes.
Qualifications
- Terminal Degree (MFA)
- Two years teaching 2-D fundamentals, drawing, painting, or printmaking at the university level.
- A pictorial arts background with the ability to teach a wide variety of two-dimensional courses including, dry and wet drawing mediums and oil and water based painting mediums including watercolor.
- Desirable for the candidate to have some familiarity with digital processes.
Preferred Qualifications
- Teaching experience at the university level with two years of teaching in Painting and Drawing and/or Printmaking at the university level.

Compensation and salary range placement are determined by qualifications and experience. To learn more about range placement, please see University Policy S21-2 . Anticipated Starting Salary L-A / Range 2 - $5507 - $5959 L-B / Range 3 - $6221 - $7481 L-C / Range 4 - $6825 - $9431 L-D / Range 5 - $8593 - $10347 Range salaries above are the anticipated monthly salary rate of full-time AY faculty--part-time rates are prorated. There are 6 monthly payments per semester (full-time AY annual salary = rate x 12).
Schedule
The work for this faculty position is located in the State of California and requires commuting to the campus.
