About the role
The Avondale School District in Rochester Hills, MI is seeking a Full-Time Armed Security Officer to join their team. This position offers a $200 new hire bonus after 90 days and is available on a 1st shift schedule from Monday through Friday, either 6:30am to 3:00pm or 7:30am to 4:00pm.
Primary Responsibilities
- Patrol school grounds, buildings, parking lots, and perimeters to deter and detect unauthorized or suspicious activity.
- Maintain security systems, alarms, and surveillance cameras to ensure campus safety.
- Respond promptly and effectively to emergencies, alarms, disturbances, medical incidents, and threats.
- Enforce school policies, rules, and regulations fairly and consistently.
- Provide a visible, approachable, and professional security presence to deter violence or disruptions.
- Avoid crises, lockdowns, evacuations, and other emergency drills or procedures.
- Complete detailed and accurate incident and daily activity reports.
- Liaise with local law enforcement and emergency responders when needed.
- For armed officers: Maintain safe handling and secure storage of assigned firearms, using it only when legally justified and in accordance with training and policy.
- Attend all required training, including de-escalation, child interaction, and crisis intervention techniques.
Position Requirements
- A high school diploma or equivalent.
- Prior security, law enforcement, or military experience preferred, especially in educational settings.
- Excellent communication, observation, and conflict-resolution skills.
- Ability to remain calm and professional in stressful situations.
- Understanding of child/adolescent behavior and a commitment to building rapport with students.
- Valid state-issued armed security license/permit, proof of firearms training/qualification, and compliance with all local legal requirements.
- Must pass company pistol qualification.
- The ability to remain calm, professional, and decisive under pressure.
- Excellent observation, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- A strong understanding of use-of-force principles and de-escalation techniques.
- The ability to pass background checks, drug screenings, and any required psychological evaluations.
- Physically capable of standing or walking for extended periods and responding quickly to emergencies.
- Flexible availability, including mornings, afternoons, evenings, and special events as needed.
