About the role
The Area Director position is a high-profile leadership role at Black & Veatch. In this capacity, you will serve as part of the Water/Wastewater business leadership team, responsible for managing the successful delivery of water-related infrastructure projects in the multi-million-dollar range in the Upper Mid-West.
This role is designated as a business traveler work schedule, requiring consistent travel of 60% or more. On travel weeks, non-travel days may be worked in the office or remotely. On non-travel weeks, professionals work in a BV office location 3 days a week and remotely 2 days a week.
Responsibilities
- Lead business management efforts with a focus on client relationship development in the Upper Mid-West, positioning within target client organizations, leading pursuit teams, and driving both top-line and bottom-line growth.
- Manage water and wastewater engineering capture strategies requiring global resources and/or multiple partners.
- Accountable for project performance and specific new business objectives, including complex contract negotiations with client management.
- Create opportunities for new and repeat business while managing varied complex risks, including fixed-price projects, new technology, non-domestic markets, or new clients.
- Business Development:
- Lead team efforts in marketing strategy development, prospect identification, proposal development, client presentations, project budgeting, and contracting.
- Accountable for new business objectives and overall project performance.
- Project Management:
- Interact with assigned clients, engage in client and community activities, and promote Black & Veatch’s market presence.
- Support the development of the overall market business plan, market strategies, and client engagement strategies.
- Leverage Black & Veatch technical and management resources to advance market footprint.
- Project Execution:
- Oversee engineering manager(s) and develop project performance goals.
- Accountable for implementation and active involvement with internal project teams and owner representatives.
- Perform or assist with commercial management of projects, including budgeting, invoicing, payments, and project performance reviews.
- Staff Management:
- Focus on team development, mentoring, and coaching for performance improvement.
- Recommend training, promotions, and identify new candidates to expand the team.
- Act as a project manager, leading a project team that may vary by project.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in a technical discipline or equivalent experience.
- 15+ years of active water/wastewater experience with demonstrated leadership in the Central region market.
- Professional Engineering License.
- Understanding of budgets and financial metrics.
- Contract negotiation skills, including knowledge of terms, risks, pricing, and payment terms.
- Ability to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements, including criminal/civil background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search.

Pay
Annual compensation range: $233,993.00 - $416,724.00.
