About the Role

Responsible for serving as Pep Boys' field technical expert by providing advanced diagnostic support, technician mentoring, technical training, and operational assistance to assigned markets. Partners with store leadership and field operations to improve diagnostic accuracy, reduce comebacks, investigate engine claims, support equipment utilization, and develop technician capabilities while protecting company assets and delivering exceptional customer service.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for all aspects of diagnosing and repairing a customer’s vehicle as well as caring for the vehicle while it is being repaired and properly securing it after repair is complete.
  • Ensure all training completions are maintained at 100%.
  • Become a resource for technical matters related to installation and proper application of parts and accessories.
  • Focus on customer needs while expanding technician diagnostic aptitude.
  • Maintain technical capabilities to ensure proficient use of service equipment and maintain certification status.
  • Investigate engine claims, identify root cause, and protect Pep Boys through accurate technical analysis and documentation.
  • Deliver formal and informal technical training, mentoring, and coaching to improve technician diagnostic capabilities and first-time fix rates.
  • This position requires 51-75% travel to different store locations.

Requirements

  • 5-8 years of technical experience required.
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • 8 or more ASE certifications (A1 through A8, L1) are preferred.
  • Section 609 Certification required.
  • State Inspection license, if applicable.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Successful completion of pre-employment background check and drug screen.
  • OEM scan tool and vehicle programming experience preferred.
  • Ability to interpret OEM service information, wiring diagrams, oscilloscope waveforms, programming procedures, and advanced diagnostic data.
  • Computer literacy, including Microsoft platforms.
  • Interpret data from a wide variety of scan tools and cascade results to different audience levels.

Skills

  • Possession of, or actively pursuing, ASE certifications (A1, A2, A3, A4 Steering and Suspension, A5 Brakes, A6 Electrical, A7, A8 Engine Performance, L1 Advanced Engine Performance) are required.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret retail business reports, professional and/or technical journals, time reports, operational reports, government regulations, merchandising reports, plan-o-gram instructions, or technical procedures.
  • Collect data or facts and draw valid and accurate conclusions.
  • Apply mathematical formulas to calculate commission, discounts, and interest preferred.
  • Interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Strong verbal and overall communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate technical information to technicians, store leadership, and field operations.
  • Strong presentation and mentoring skills.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple store requests independently.
  • Ability to analyze operational trends and recommend corrective actions.

People Management

This position has no direct reports but serves as the technical leader and mentor for technicians within assigned markets. The ADS provides technical guidance, coaching, and operational support while partnering with store managers, territory managers, market directors, and corporate support teams.

  • Extensive standing, walking, pushing, and reaching.
  • Full range of motion for reaching, bending, and stooping.
  • Repetitive movement of hands, arms, and legs.
  • May drive a vehicle if needed.
  • Lifting of heavy equipment over 50 pounds is required.
  • May work outside and be exposed to weather.
  • Exposure to adverse weather conditions, chemicals, odors, dirt, and dust.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
