About the role

The Archivist supports the acquisition, organization, preservation, and accessibility of archival collections in the Urban Archives. They assist researchers, engage with donors and campus partners, contribute to outreach efforts, and support student employees and interns within Special Collections & Archives.

Responsibilities

  • Accessions archival collections across the unit, including creating accession records and other required documentation and performing basic preservation work.
  • Processes archival collections, including intellectual and physical arrangement.
  • Develops finding aids for manuscript and archival collections.
  • Engages in ongoing collection evaluation; works with current and potential donors to ensure timely transfer of materials to Special Collections & Archives.
  • Affords assistance to researchers with ready reference, information, and directional questions; refers more specialized research questions to other members of the team as necessary.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Four (4) years of Library Assistant experience with High School or equivalent certification;
  • Three (3) years Library Assistant experience with equivalent to an Associate’s Degree (60 units);
  • Two (2) years Library Assistant experience with equivalent to a Bachelor's Degree (120 units) in job related field required.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of archival principles, standards, and best practices related to accessioning, arrangement, description, preservation, and stewardship of archival and manuscript collections.
  • Ability to create and maintain accurate accession records, organize collections intellectually and physically, and develop clear, user-focused finding aids that enhance access and discovery.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and detail-oriented skills with the ability to evaluate, process, and describe archival materials in accordance with established archival standards and procedures.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, staff, and other stakeholders in support of ongoing collection preservation, description, and access initiatives.
  • Knowledge of archival collection management practices, including storage, preservation, retention, and risk mitigation strategies.
  • Ability to assess collection needs, apply sound judgment in evaluating preservation priorities, and collaborate with faculty and staff to support the long-term stewardship and accessibility of archival materials.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills with the ability to work effectively with current and prospective donors, campus partners, and other stakeholders.
  • Ability to evaluate potential acquisitions, facilitate the timely transfer of materials, and support collection development activities that align with the mission and priorities of Special Collections & Archives.

Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule

The university offers an excellent benefits package, including but not limited to: medical, dental, vision, retirement & savings, tuition waiver, and more. Classification: 2888 / Library Services Specialist III / 1. The anticipated HIRING RANGE is $4725– $5428 per month, dependent on qualifications and experience. The salary range for this classification is: $4280 - $6235 per month. Hours: Full Time; 40 hours per week; Monday through Friday. May include evenings and weekends.
