Architectural Discipline Leader

About the Role

As the discipline leader, you will provide strategic, operational, and people leadership for the architectural discipline in Sioux Falls, ensuring high-quality project delivery, strong staff development, and effective collaboration across the organization. This role balances discipline-wide leadership with hands-on project involvement while fostering a culture of accountability, learning, and teamwork.

Responsibilities

People & Discipline Leadership

• Lead, coach, mentor, and support discipline staff with enthusiasm and intention, creating an environment where individuals are motivated to grow, contribute, and excel.
• Champion a positive, inclusive, and high-performing culture that reflects firm values and encourages collaboration, trust, and accountability.
• Support recruitment, onboarding, retention, and succession planning to attract and develop top talent.
• Partner with team members to create and guide individual career development plans, supporting ongoing learning, continuing education, and purposeful career progression.
• Proactively manage staffing levels, skill mix, and workload distribution to ensure staff are challenged, supported, and positioned for success.
• Perform core people-management activities including time and utilization review, salary discussions, and performance evaluations.

Project Delivery

• Support and participate in discipline-related project work while maintaining accountability for overall discipline performance, including design quality, responsiveness, client satisfaction, and alignment with firm standards.
• Ensure projects are executed in accordance with scope, schedule, and budget.
• Provide technical oversight to ensure consistency, quality, and integrity of discipline deliverables.
• Collaborate with discipline leads, project managers, and firm leadership to anticipate resource needs and resolve challenges.
• Actively promote cross-discipline coordination to support integrated project delivery.
• Strengthen client relationships through technical leadership awareness and a solutions-oriented approach.
• Advance discipline standards, tools, and delivery approaches, including cultivating relationships with “Friends in the Industry” and supporting discipline-specific delivery methods such as design-build collaborations.
