Architectural Designer - Healthcare

About the role

You will work with guidance from a Project Manager or Project Architect, supporting all phases of Acute and Non-Acute Healthcare projects—from validation and pre-design through Construction Documentation, construction administration, and close-out. Weekly activities may include coordinating with project teams, consultants, contractors, and owners. Alongside your Project Manager or Project Architect, you may support multiple projects simultaneously across various design and construction phases.

Responsibilities

• Lead projects of medium complexity and size.
• Collaborate in project team settings and design critiques.
• Inspire creativity, critical thought, and design excellence internally and externally.
• Develop building designs from functional and aesthetic perspectives, aligning with client requirements, budget, and program.
• Express design intent through sketches, physical models, electronic models, diagrams, massing studies, and other visual formats.
• Utilize BIM technologies to create three-dimensional models of buildings and their components.
• Present design or technical information to stakeholders during early project phases.
• Develop building designs within cost parameters.
• Evaluate and select building systems and materials.
• Coordinate building systems to ensure compatibility with design intent.
• Implement sustainable design principles.
• Analyze sites incorporating geotechnical, hydrological, environmental, social, economic, and contextual conditions.
• Maintain design intent through documentation and construction.
• Review shop drawings and submittals, respond to RFIs, prepare site observation reports, and perform other contract administration tasks.

Requirements

• Engage in creative and critical thought.
• Produce technical designs at a level perceived externally as excellent.
• Communicate concepts and ideas effectively through hand sketches.
• Lead technical documentation on medium-sized projects, ensuring accuracy and completeness while coordinating with the team to meet project budget and schedule.
• Interpret sketches, drawings, codes, building programs, and similar materials.
• Present abstract and technical ideas to clients and client representatives.
• Apply accessibility codes, building codes, and life-safety codes to a variety of project scopes and complexities.
• Demonstrate general knowledge of building construction systems, constructability, materials, and industry standards.
• Understand the relationship between drawings and specifications.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Revit, AutoCAD, Adobe Creative Suite, SketchUP, Newforma, Sefaira, Bluebeam, and modeling software such as Enscape.
• Strong oral and written communication skills.
• Valid driver’s license with a good driving record.
• Ability to travel up to 20%.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Architecture or related field.
• Minimum of 3 years of experience, preferably on large teams with healthcare or institutional clients.
• Healthcare (OSHPD/HCAI) experience is desired.
• LEED Green Associate or LEED AP preferred.

Work Environment

• Hybrid office environment with extended periods of computer use and sedentary work.
• Field work may include exposure to inclement weather and active construction sites.

Pay

Locations in NYC, CA (Bay Area), and NJ (RP): $90,500.00 - $131,200.00 annually. Certain roles are bonus eligible. Actual compensation for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on agreed working hours per week.
