Archaeology Administrator

About the role

The Archaeology Administrator supports the Lighthouse Archaeological Maritime Program (LAMP), the maritime research division of the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum, in both a project archaeologist and administrative capacity. This position assists with daily operations, public education, outreach, field-based research, laboratory and analytical work, and report writing. The role involves managing internal communications, budgets, grants, and collaborative projects with external partners and Museum staff, as well as contributing to archaeological research and report drafting. The Archaeology Administrator also plays a key role in planning and executing LAMP’s annual Field School program.

Responsibilities

• Under the leadership of the director, ensure quality of work and performance management, including staying within budgets, aligning actions with organizational goals, and communicating needs within the department and across the organization.
• Ensure the department meets timelines and compliance requirements.
• Lead grants management, budgeting, and reporting for the department.
• Perform archaeological research and fieldwork, both terrestrial and submerged.
• Train staff and volunteers in archaeological ethics, interpretations, methodologies, and vessel safety protocols.
• Facilitate planning and evaluation of artifact and cultural interpretations in collaboration with Museum staff.
• Build community knowledge and support for LAMP, the Museum, and its mission through outreach programs and events.
• Communicate effectively with the public, staff, and volunteers.
• Foster and maintain productive working relationships with all Museum staff.
• Support Museum programs as a team player.
• Utilize computer programs and empirical research-based systems effectively.
• Serve as backup Captain and Dive Safety Officer.
• Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Advanced archaeological or anthropological degree required.
• Three years of relevant experience in a field setting.
• Basic computer skills and experience with word processing and database systems management.
• Excellent organizational skills and keen attention to detail.
• Outstanding interpersonal and management skills.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Excellent presentation skills.
• Must be an American Academy of Underwater Sciences (AAUS) Scientific Diver, provide Verification of Training (VOT), or qualify as a LAMP Scientific Diver.
• Must have a Captain’s License or the ability to obtain one.
• Divemaster or Instructor experience preferred.
• Training in CPR, AED, First Aid, and O₂ administration.
• Ability to stand for long periods and lift more than 35 lbs.
• Ability to climb stairs, such as those in the lighthouse tower.
• Ability to operate heavy machinery in or near water and safely operate dive equipment in an environment with students and multiple regulatory burdens.

Physical Requirements

• Essential functions include duties aboard a sea-going vessel and supporting Museum operations.
• Must be a competent mariner able to handle the demands of diving, assisting with a boat, and navigating shifting conditions such as changing weather.
• Must hold requisite dive safety certifications.
• Ability to stand for long periods and climb the lighthouse tower as required.
• Moderate amount of heavy lifting (15%–20%) is required.
• Modest amount (10–15%) of business travel is required.
