Archaeology Museum Assistant

This position is in the Department of History & Archaeology and the Collins Institute, providing an opportunity to develop professional skills while supporting museum operations and educational outreach.

• Independently maintain open hours in the Museum Gallery.
• Handle, document, and secure the museum’s antiquities collection.
• Serve as a docent for visitors and assist with K-12 and college outreach activities.
• Organize and set up museum trips, activities, and events for diverse audiences.
• Maintain the museum’s database and Facebook page.

Responsibilities

• Train in proper handling of the collection and ensure safety and security of museum materials.
• Develop and assist in teaching activities for K-12 children during outreach programs.
• Update and manage the museum’s collection database using technology tools.
• Support the setup and execution of museum events, trips, and educational programs.
• Communicate effectively with the public, staff, and visitors.

Requirements

• Background in education or experience working with K-12 schoolchildren.
• Organizational skills to manage museum open hours and maintain an updated database.
• Strong work ethic with a focus on the safety and security of the museum and its collection.
• Good communication skills and openness to training and public interaction.
• Proficiency in computer skills, including social media and database management.
• Mindful awareness of the fragility of antiquities; ability to handle objects carefully and navigate exhibit spaces safely.

Preferred Qualifications

• Work experience with K-12 students.
• Major in education or related field.
• Creative abilities to develop teaching plans and activities for museum visits.
• Ability to assist in teaching classes within the museum setting.
