About the role
Stantec's Cultural Resources team has an opportunity for on-call archaeological field technicians to support field projects throughout the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions. The position is based in Maine and New York, requiring extensive travel and occasional overnight stays.
Responsibilities
- Execute field-related tasks under the supervision of an archaeological field supervisor.
- Perform archaeological fieldwork tasks including controlled surface survey, shovel test survey, and excavation.
- Clean, catalog, photograph, and label artifacts recovered from surface collection and excavation.
- Assist with setting up a site grid, datum, and excavation units.
- Map site plans and individual shovel tests, units, and features in plan and profile.
- Identify historic and precontact artifacts following standard collection procedures.
- Identify cultural features.
- Adaptability and willingness to work as part of a team and independently.
- Ability and willingness to work under varied weather conditions.
- Ability to walk and conduct fieldwork for long hours through sometimes rugged terrain and carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Dedication to following and promoting a strong safety culture; industry-specific safety training certificates are an asset.
- Detail-oriented; resourceful; self-motivated; strong initiative.
- Positive and energetic attitude.
- Frequent out-of-town travel, potentially for extended periods of time.
Qualifications
- B.A./B.S. in anthropology/archaeology or related field with sufficient experience.
- Successful completion of an archaeology field school, preferred.
- At least 6 months of experience conducting archaeological survey and excavation, preferred.
- Knowledge of prehistoric and historic material culture.
- Ability to complete physically demanding tasks in remote areas and/or humid continental climate, including walking, hiking, carrying loads up to 50 pounds, and digging.
- Valid driver’s license and personal transportation.
Skills
- Experience conducting Phase I, II, and III archaeological survey including inventory, testing, and/or data recovery.
- Previous experience with digital field recording (e.g., ESRI Field Maps app for ArcGIS).
- Adaptability and willingness to work as part of a team and independently.
- Ability and willingness to work under varied weather conditions.
- Ability to walk and conduct fieldwork for long hours through sometimes rugged terrain and ability to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds.

Benefits
Stantec offers competitive pay ranging from $41,000.00 - $57,300.00 annually in various locations in ME, VA to $45,500.00 - $63,700.00 annually in various locations in MN, OH, VT, & Various CA, ME, NY, VA to $53,700.00 - $75,200.00 annually in various locations in WA, DC & Various CA, MA, VA.
