About the role
North Wind Resource Consulting, established in 2011, specializes in environmental documentation and permitting; natural and cultural resource surveys; wildlife and botanical expertise; NEPA technical services; historic and prehistoric surveys; environmental consultation (e.g., Section 106 for cultural resources, Section 404 for wetlands, Section 7 for endangered species); and GIS/mapping capabilities. The Archaeological Field Director is a mid-level position responsible for in-field analysis and scientific studies for projects in the greater Phoenix area and across Arizona.
Responsibilities
- Lead field surveys for simple to complex projects with accurate information and data collection.
- Organize fieldwork mobilization and demobilization.
- Assist and mentor crews of Archaeological Technicians in survey strategies, organization, artifact identification, data collection, and adherence to field protocols and safety practices.
- Participate in project kickoff meetings and updates.
- Collect data using GPS units (e.g., Trimble, Garmin, IOS Field Collector), photograph project areas and activities, and identify artifacts/features.
- Ensure projects are completed on schedule and within budget.
- Drive daily to project areas in Arizona using a North Wind vehicle.
- Maintain North Wind and project-specific safety awareness and practices.
- Communicate regularly with the North Wind Project Manager, field technicians, and Line Supervisor.
- Participate in North Wind training.
Requirements
- Master’s degree in Archaeology or equivalent discipline.
- Previously permitted for work as a field director on state, BLM, and forest lands in Arizona.
- 3+ years of supervisory field experience directly related to the duties and permitting agency requirements.
- 5+ years of demonstrated experience with Class III archaeological surveys, monitoring, or testing projects in the Southwest.
- Proficiency in site recording for historic and prehistoric sites according to land agency specifications.
- Willingness to work in inclement conditions (e.g., extreme heat, wind, sun without shade).
- Strong technical writing skills, demonstrated in completion of Class I and Class III reports.
- Ability to follow project budgets and communicate efficiencies or overages.
- Strong work ethic and professionalism.
- Proficiency in computer programs such as Word, Excel, Adobe, and Outlook.
- Willingness to learn, ask questions, and follow written/oral instructions.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal skills, and attention to detail.
- Ability and willingness to travel to field locations, walk long hours across rugged terrain, and carry equipment/supplies up to 20 pounds.
- Willingness to work irregular hours (e.g., early mornings, late nights, weekends).
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic setting while maintaining high performance standards.
Special Requirements
- Ability and willingness to travel to project areas.
- Must pass pre-employment background check and drug screening.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license with all necessary endorsements.
- Able to operate a 4-wheel high-clearance North Wind vehicle (e.g., truck or jeep).
- Applicants must have REAL ID ACT-compliant documentation at time of hire and no prohibitive records for federal government contract employment.
Physical Demands
- Long periods of walking, climbing, standing, stooping, kneeling, and bending for up to 10-12 hours per day.
- Frequent carrying of a backpack with equipment up to 20 lbs. across uneven terrain.
Working Environment
Work is performed strictly outdoors in harsh and rapidly changing environments, including extreme heat or cold, and traversing uneven terrain.
