About the role
Do you have experience in Aquatics? Want to learn how to lead a team of lifeguards and swim instructors? Are you a team player? Are you 18 or older? Do you have an interest in Aquatics and Safety Training courses? Become an Aquatic Lead at the YMCA!
Responsibilities
- Plan and facilitate Red Cross Lifeguarding, CPR/First Aid, and Babysitting courses
- Available 4:30–9:00 AM Monday–Friday
- Lead by example using your training to perform rescues in and around the pool
- Teach swimming lessons according to the YMCA Swim Lessons curriculum
- Keep skills fresh by leading and participating in In-service Training and Drills
- Educate members/guests on pool rules and safety, taking the lead in difficult situations
- Supervise staff and oversee activities in the absence of the Director or Coordinator
- Assist leadership staff with administrative tasks
- Assist with pump/chemical room maintenance duties
- Be a positive role model for youths in your community
- Uphold the YMCA Policies and Standards
Requirements
- Be at least 18 years old
- Have at least 2 years of aquatic experience
- Be available at least 20 hours per week
- Be available for morning opening shifts and weekend shifts
- Possess (or obtain within 30 days) a current YMCA or Red Cross Lifeguard Certification*
- Possess (or obtain within 30 days) a current CPR/AED & First Aid Certification*
- Possess a current YMCA or Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Certification (preferred)
- Possess a current CPO or AFO certification (preferred)
- Be able to pass a written/physical assessment prior to duty
- Have visual and auditory ability to respond to critical incidents and physical ability to act swiftly in emergency situations
- Have ability to observe participant activities adequately, enforce safety regulations, and apply appropriate policies and procedures
- Current certification not necessary—certification/training is available!
Red Cross Lifeguard Prerequisite Skills
- 300-yard continuous swim (freestyle or breaststroke) demonstrating endurance and breath control (face in the water)
- 2 minutes treading water legs only (no hands)
- Brick rescue within 1 minute 40 seconds (without the use of goggles: swim 20 yards, dive 7–10 feet to retrieve 10-lb object, return to starting point on back with both hands on brick, exit without using ladder or steps)
